The above is a wix 51515 or Napa Gold 1515 its huge.
look at the specs for the 1515 above and compare with the OEM converted to its wix equivalent bellow.

I think you could use it, if you have the room and an extra qt of oil.

Thank you, I will check these filters out.
I was also told the Motorcraft FL 400 would work. Any thoughts on that? By the way this is for a 2.3 Ford/Mazda engine. I converted over from cartridge filter to spin on using Mazda parts. It appears to have plenty of room for length and width.

The one I mentioned (51516) is the equivalent to an fl400S MotorCraft. It's a longer PH3614/FL910.

The 3/4-16 thread and (approx) 2.8/2.4 gasket size is the most popular combination on the planet. Used by VW/AUDI, Volvo, Delorean, Mopar, Ford, and a buttload of other engines. Some go with a 2.4/2.2 gasket like (I think) Toyota.

Next time you're in the parts store, grab a FL1A and a FL910/FL400S and hold the gaskets together. The difference, within a couple of 0.1's is the can and length of the can. The gasket on the FL1A is inboard a bit. The gasket on the teacup size is on the outer extreme.

You then realize that the thread and gasket are constants on a good many filters and then you're into a given can diameter, indexed over various lengths. For the 2.7-2.8 gasket diameter, you can reason that 2.9x will be your smallest can.

If you want to, x'ref all of the numbers below to Wix. Many won't be distinctly different in Wix ..and some may not x'ref at all. Donaldson appears to offer 43 different 3/4-16 threaded lube filters.

FL910.

Oversize FL400S. Same size but longer. This is what I would use if I had room.

The FL-1A might fit but you would have to comfirm. It is both fatter and taller.

Heres a comparison between the 1515 and the 1516, the pure one is the size of the 1515, the 1516 was my last filter.

Since I had a FL-400s here for my ranger I just used that.
Going by the dipstick best I could (the sticks on these cars are horade to read)I had to add about 1/2 quart more. Which seemed about right. I do have a question. Since the oil filter is mounted straight up and down I don't have to worry about oil running out of the filter. Will having the silcon valve that the FL-400S has casuse any problems? I can't think of any reason myself. Does anyone eles have a thought?
Thanks

No problem, mounted vertical or not, the filter without anti drain back valves will drain the oil in the journals and pathways back to the sump through the filter, need the anti drain either way its mounted, unless you have a valve built into the block. Fl400S is a good filter same specs as the last Napa gold I used.

In vertical mounts, some man's go without an ADBV. The reason being is that once the top of the media is exposed, any siphoning is stopped. The filter cannot empty. Now these engine probably have very little "oil column" in front of the filter. The spec's on most ADBV are NOT to hold indefinitely. They only have to slow the reverse flow.

no problem with suing the FL400S. the only issue with the fl400 over the fl910 is that on the foci they hang down to far and can break off, causing non warranty engine failures.

The filter in this case a 2.3 Mercury Milan is protected by the the frame rail coming across the front. And my car also has the under side protected by a plastic shroud, with covers to un-bolt to get at the filter and drain plug. Kind of a pain but sure keeps the under side clean during the winter months.
Thanks to everyone for sharing your knowledge.
