How do you know if the ADBV failed on your filter?

Even so called "restrictive" filters will flow everything the pump puts out at start-up because the oil pump is a positive displacement device. This means it will force all of the oil flow through the filter as long as the pump is not in pressure relief. For an oil pump to go into pressure relief at start-up RPM means the oil would have to be super viscous/thick ... like below zero temperatures without a full synthetic oil.

"Dry start" = oil has drained out of the filter and/or galleries associated with the pump/filter path that feeds the engine's lubrication system.

The ADBV helps prevent "dry starts" by acting as a "one way valve" that helps stop the flow of oil out of the filter & main gallery going back to the sump.
