COMPTON — Firefighters today knocked down a fire triggered by the explosion of a tank filled with antifreeze at a hazardous-waste recycling company in Compton, authorities said.
No one was injured.

Forty firefighters sent to the DeMenno-Kerdoon plant at 541 E. Pine St. at 11:58 p.m. yesterday extinguished the flames in about an hour, according to the Compton Fire Department.

The cause of the explosion was under investigation. A damage estimate was not immediately available.

Deputies had prepared to evacuate nearby residences in case hazardous chemicals were released into the air, but no evacuation was deemed necessary, said Sgt. Robert Westphal of the sheriff's Compton Station.

According to the California Environmental Protection Agency, DeMenno- Kerdoon is a hazardous-waste recycling facility that treats, stores and transfers used oil, oil/water mixtures and used antifreeze received from refineries, manufacturers and other sources.

Or is this a case of inaccurate journalism?

At a high enough temperature it will. Remember the Fieros that were burning up in the 80's? Coolant slowly leaked onto the exhaust manifold and under the right conditions it would ignite and start a nice little fire in the engine compartment.

Yes it will burn. It has a flash point of 232F.

I just sucessfully lit a few ml of Peak Antifreeze in a petri dish here in the lab. It took a bit to get it going, but once it was warm enough, it burned with a low, clear blue flame (like alcohol).

Tosh,
in the Fiero case above, it started as a 50:50 mix, and was concentrated by heat boiling the water off it.
