A Google engineer years ago when USB-C was just starting to be embraced at Apple and of course Google on the Pixel/Pixelbook found that off-spec or cheap USB-C cables can kill your devices.
Apple has the MFi program in place to ensure cables meet Apple specs, the USB Forum doesn't have a program in place to ensure cable quality. I generally stick to OEM, AmazonBasics, Anker or see if I can find a cable made by Space Shuttle or Belden China that's under a different label to ensure quality.
