I think you are missing the point. Soccer is a very, very low cost game to play and it is the barrier that breaks the ice when you trying to meet new friends.
Unless you saw this as a kid it is hard for most folks to understand the LOVE for the sport.

Americans generally don't care. It is a big deal South of the US border, most of Europe, Africa, and yes, even in Asia.
Soccer is far more popular around the world than US football or baseball.

Haha, there are over 3 billion soccer fans, a bit more than the NFL.
More people in the USA watch soccer than baseball.
When is it supposed to be? I am amused to think that people actually believe the real world will stop for a game, lol!
Yes, it's also the "real" football meaning the game actually played with your feet lol.
Don't get me wrong I LOVE soccer, but all the controversy surrounding the FIFA world cup being held in Qatar, has left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth with FIFA.

By the way, the World Cup is only once very four years. Why not tune in or record the USA’s first game starting Monday at 2:00 PM EST when Wales kicks America’s butt. That will get you going. Flame suit on!
