Need more information-how many miles on the engine, any blue smoke on startup, excessive blowby, gaskets leaking? MaxLife red bottle syn blend has helped with oil burners & leakers for me, including my XJ-it's actually slowed my RMS leak enough that I haven't had to add oil between changes anymore. I'm not sure I would use syn on an oil burner, usually they go through it like water, and catalytic converter failure/plugging happens.

For a second there, I thought I had a stroke while reading this thread. I have an idea. How about a high mileage oil? I would stay with 5-30, that's what's recommended, right?

5/30 Conventional, problem solved or better said you will have the least amount of oil consumption compared to what you have now.
Makes zero sense to use syn if you want to cut down on oil consumption.
