EPA poised to announce rejection of CAFE

Cliff notes

Quote:
But the Obama rules included a review by April 2018 as to whether the final years were feasible or not.

By declaring the Obama rules "not appropriate, the Trump administration can reopen the process of setting vehicle targets agreed to by automakers in 2011.

Pruitt is expected to declare that the existing 2022-2025 model year rules on fuel economy must be revised but he is not expected to immediately propose new requirements, people familiar with the plans said. They asked not to be identified because they were not authorized to speak to the news media.

We can get to the new CAFE requirements. Problem is, the cars will be so small and under powered, no one will want to drive/buy them.

An 1800 pound compact car with a 1.0L engine sounds fantastic on the highway. The late 80's Honda civic's got high 40's MPG. But they were tiny, not that safe, and lacked comforts a person would expect from a modern car.

No manufacturer should make separate cars for the California market. They ALL should get together and say accept the 49 state car, or none at all. They all should just boycott the state.

No more 0w20 ?

You cannot just legislate better fuel economy without the technology to do so. The legislature could basically say starting April 1, 2018, all cars sold must get 100 mpg. Sounds great huh? Because that's exactly amounts to what the old EPA did. Extremely hard numbers to achieve, only achievable by selling cars that no one actually wants to buy. I know, inserting some logic, facts, and real world numbers into the equation is hard to stomach.

The auto makers CAN make extremely efficient cars. The problem is that they will sit on the lots unsold. People have certain standards in a car they want. Certain size cars they need for their families. How UNAMERICAN it would be to get rid of all trucks, all SUV's, all full size cars, and just sell super tiny sub compact cars, because that is all the law allows. Everyone can buy a Geo Metro size car. Yeahhhhh, how happy we all will be.

I think they should ban trucks and suvs for personal use. You should have a permit to drive one and to be using it to haul/tow something (or heading to there).

People buy big to "protect" themselves. Its a vicious cycle. So now if your in anything less then a truck/suv and an involved with a truck or suv you going to be severely injured.

Also make licensing an actually challenge and maybe have to retest every few years.

Here in MD your license test is 20 questions and a brief maneuvering course. Its beyond basic.

No the viscosities will stay.

Per the NHRSA/EPA reviews this is the single cheapest mechanism at the OEM's disposal to measurably improve mileage. And there's no piles of failed engines at the side of the road. It's a valid compromise

Saying that future targets are unachievable doesn't equal them going backwards.

See, that's the fundamental problem...people wanting to tell other people how to live their lives...

Is your bed room tidy ?

I'll take that bet - 0W20 is here to stay.

From the Pennzoil Q&A

18. Since fuel dilution appears here to stay with the proliferation of direct injection, why are lower viscosity oils being developed for use in them?

• It is not a given that fuel dilution is higher with direct injection engines. In fact, improvements in direct injection engine designs are likely to reduce fuel dilution. However, the quest for lower viscosity oils, whether for direct injection engines or otherwise, is due to the challenge of providing improved fuel economy.

Whoa, dismissal of all we've seen and admission it's all about efficiency.

Wow. We vill need your papers to determine the type of car you can be approved for. Anything else is verboten.

There are places you can go to be governed like that. Perhaps North Korea is more to your liking.

they may keep the grade but the owners manual will relegate it to low volume high priced tree hugger junk.

Smart manufacturers will see beyond this administration and know that R&D and process engineering is a
long term commitment that will be needed anyway, when the time comes, they can turn on the supply chain
and have cars that meet or at least come close to the CAFE targets!

whatever politicians vote in favor of CAFE should have to personally drive a vehicle that meets CAFE. apparently 70% of the population want to drive trucks and crossovers; so CAFE makes no sense unless you build in some tiers....
