Nothing in that price range could be considered good.

What about this? Gets 4 stars over 100 reviews.

The cheap detectors will have so many false alarms you will either never speed or ignore it, Then when you are stopped the officer will see it and you will get a ticker no matter how nice you are.

Valentine's sell on eBay https://www.ebay.com/itm/Valentine-One-V1-Radar-Detector/372214600600?hash=item56a9b81398:g:S~cAAOSwtKVaeLRu

Use the serial number to see what version it is http://www.valentine1.com/upgrades/

Valentine maybe the best along with the new MAX 360 https://www.escortradar.com/max360/
Front and rear protection with count. This is valuable. I was driving about 90 in a Jag, my Valentine went off. I slowed and passed the trap and stepped on it and it started to go off. Though it was the guy I just passed and kept on...but the detector showed 2 sources and the arrows pointed to one ahead and one behind. I slowed and passed another trap within a mile of the first.

Id save up and go with a Valentine as well. Well worth the money, plus you can always send it in for updates. That $3-400 is well worth it the first ticket it saves you from.

Beltronics RX65 can be found around $100 and works great. I use it as my RD when traveling and it has picked up all types of radar in many cities.

I run an Escort SOLO battery unit so I can easily take it to rental vehicles. Works wonderful, compact and seems to have a very long battery life. Pricey though. Ed

If you do go with an el-cheapo fuzz buster (not criticizing; have chosen the same path myself), there is one thing you should look for on the unit (and avoid any that do not have this functionality): the ability to disable the K band radar alerts.

Any el-cheapo unit will have the old City, City2, Hi-way approach to minimizing false alerts on the older radar bands (X & K), but with the advent of driver-assisted safety tech on new cars, switching between modes to avoid false alerts is like deer hunting with a sawed-off shotgun - a terrible way to do it, in other words.

Since the majority of the safety stuff is using the K band radar, you will want to turn it off most of the time to avoid false alarms every time another vehicle drives by you. However, some smaller municipalities still have K band radars for traffic control in the cop cars, so having the ability to quickly re-enable K band goes hand in hand with the ability to quickly turn it off. (I have people tell me this is overrated and doesn't occur in modern cities. Hogwash; I drive through 2 smaller towns that use K band radar every single day on the way to work and then again on the way home, and the D/FW Metroplex is surely a modern suburban environment!)

The el-cheapo fuzz buster I have at the moment is a Cobra unit, which was purchased from Amazon for about $50 IIRC. It has served me well over the last couple of years, and I have no issues with how it works. It is not nearly as good as the high-end models mentioned above, but that is something I am fine with and have learned to work with so far. So I have no regrets about going el-cheapo, YMMV obviously.

Canít speak for every state, but NC is phasing out a lot of Radars. The one we have uses Ka band. We also use Lidar. I think the fcc wants to phase out the use of the other bands if I remember correctly.

Nothing. Your eyes would give better warning while saving the $100.

I have a Whistler XTR335 that was $60 back in 2011. It works well enough, but I never use it. When I do, I leave it in city mode because X band is useless.
Before that, I had the top of the line Escort Passport 8500, and it also worked well enough, but was so heavy that I was always having trouble with the mount. So I sold it after figuring it had already paid for itself.

Another good thing to use is Waze for navigation, because it warms of police reports.
