That's sad, but also so true. VWs have a tendency to require frequent coilpack replacement, and on the VW forums you often hear about the guys replacing the coilpacks as preventive maintenance.
 
Bottomline is the thermalcycling coupled with vibration that accelerates the breaking down of insulation (and the outer plastic shell). There's nothing you can do about that.

Keep them clean and dry.
Keep the other ignition parts in great shape.

Unless there are poor designs or loads of heat, this is the best we can do.
 
The life of the coil drops dramatically if you don't replace your spark plugs at the OE interval. On some cars that are hard on plugs, change plugs at 60K instead of 100K.
