why not use single grade synthetic oil?

Uh, sorry.

Tribo means tribology and is the science of investigating surface interactions and specifically wear.

Chemistry in this context is the chemistry of oils and lubricants.

Tribo-chemistry is the combined science of oils interacting with surfaces to investigate their effects on wear.

I still say that with the good quality synthetic oils now there is really little problem with shearing. Even if the oil shears..unless we are talking super performance the shearing won't cause higher wear.

Amsoil's syn straight SAE 30 wt is indeed thicker at 40 deg C than either their 5w-30 or 10w-30 products. It also has a pour point that's about 20 deg higher than the multis. I imagine you could get away with using it instead of a multi-grade in all but the coldest conditions, but given how well the multi-grades now perform, why would you want to?

Benefit or no-benefit to straight weight oils?

I cannot see any benefits to straight weight oils for North America, since as Ekpolk said, the multigrades seem to do it all.
