I just bought a 1997 Honda Civic LX D16y7 5 speed off my neighbor for a good price, it just hit 200k miles, and I am picking up where my neighbor left off in maintenance. The manual transmission is good shifting from N to 1st to 2nd, but after second, 3rd is tricky, you have to push forward on it as you let out the clutch for it to go in, if you don't, it will grind and scrape and eventually fall into N, 4th and 5th are good also, but it seems like every now and then, when I switch gears I hear/feel a slight scrape when I enter a gear, like the syncros aren't matching up right, about 1-3 times in my 12 mile commute. and putting it into reverse is easy most of the time, but sometimes it will scrape, I won't lie, I drive it harder than the average house wife, I mean come on its a civic

. I am looking for a MTF that will stop the scraping, and grinding I am hearing.

I live in Minnesota, so this thing sees the coldest of the cold and the hottest of hot weather here, and I need it shift well in all types of weather..

I am open to any good ideas or suggestions, thank you in advance.

A lot of Honda guys have good luck with the GM synchro mesh friction modified. You have to get this at a dealer.

Honda mtf works great too, very smooth, if you can stand the smell when changing it, haha!

As for the grinding most likely synchro is gone, and/or 3rd is ground away. 3rd is the gear used the most for "racing"

Everyone I know personally with a Honda manual swears by the Honda MTF, it's not overpriced from what i've heard.

In my experience, which included an 01 Civic, you should either head to a Honda dealer and get two quarts of their MTF, or find some Amsoil MTF. The Honda is only about seven bucks a quart IIRC, you only need two quarts.

I'm not sure about your problem, sounds to me you would need some new syncros which isn't a terribly hard job, but maybe for a few bucks you can try a different fluid.

Redline mtl is my recommendation. Full synthetic for a Minnesotta winter and better smoother gear changes.

Amsoil MTF
Redline MTL
BG SyncroShiftII
Honda MTF
RoyalPurple SynchroMax
Torco MTF
Wynn's MTF
Motul/Elf/Lubro-moly/...or any 75w80

yeah based on that UOA for the Amsoil MTF, and the other good things I am hearing about it, I'm going with that.

I'd like to know what your experience with the Amsoil MTF is then. I'm considering that for my Civic VX. The Honda MTF helps every time I change it, but it'd be nice not to have to do it as often.

I've been using Amsoil MTF in my 94 Accord. I have tried Honda MTF as well (green bottle, white cap stuff) and they both work very well. Amsoil is my prefence though, and has better cold-weather shifting.

Pablo, why under my car info on Amsoil's website, is this product not recommended?

Simply because that was the OE recommendation from 1992. Amsoil doesn't often deviate from manufacturer's recommendation or rather what the purchased data book says. It's a bit odd they have SSO but no 5w30, though. But I can and do suggest options when better choices exist. You can also contact tech services to confirm MTF a great choice - besides MTF is recommended for XW-30 MT applications.

Works great, better shifting right from the get go, i can assume it will only get better as it works its way into every nook and cranny
