What brand did you first have loyalty to and why?

When I was growing up my stepdad was a tech at a Ford/Lincoln/Mercury dealership. He swore by Havoline and wouldn't use anything else, so when I started driving that's all I used too for several years. Now I'm not really loyal to any one brand. I have been using a lot of Valvoline products lately though, mainly because they are proven products that are readily available pretty much everywhere at a decent price.

My father used Castrol conventional because the advertised that it was better for compact cars during the 70s and 80s. I then used it.

Also, for synthetic my dad would rather use M1, and I would rather use Castrol.

When I was a kid growing up in the 80's, I can vaguely remember my dad using pennzoil. However, I was 10 or 11 years old back in 92, and we just happened to get cable tv out our way that year. That was the first year I actually paid atention to NASCAR and I watched every race that season with my dad, and boy what a year to start watching

Anyways, my dad was a mark martin fan and ofcourse thats around the time he started running valvoline on his car, and thats when my dad started using it all our vehicles. When I started driving, all I used was Valvoline Synpower. A few cars later, I ventured out and started using Mobil 1. I found this site about 7 or 8 years ago and since then I've been using a little bit of everything, mostly SOPUS products. My dad passed away a year ago yesterday and I've sorta started running Valvoline products in our two vehicles in his honor. Sorta silly I guess, but between that and the great wear numbers I've seen in different UOA's, I figured it couldn't hurt anything. I had valvoline maxlife in my wifes 96 explorer when she totaled it this past monday (her and our unborn son are ok) but I just put Synpower in her new to us 05 explorer. I've also got some Synpower 5w-20 ready to go in my scion when the Fram Synthetic in it now is used up. I was using Nextgen in it prior to that

I was equally loyal to Valvoline and Castrol.

I was one of those kids brought up believing that Pennzoil and Quaker State was dirty, sludgy [censored] full of wax. I always avoided them like the plague. And for some reason, I never got into Mobil 1. To this day I have never bought a single drop of Mobil oil.

In a twist of irony, Pennzoil Ultra is now currently my favorite oil.

When it comes to oil I have zero brand loyalty, then and now.
Whatever I figure is the "best" for what I'm looking for.
When I was young it was usually the best price.
Today it's usually the oil with the best spec's that I'm interested in.

When I first started driving, all I used was Valvoline, because that's what was on the side of Mark Martin's car.

Today, I mainly use XOM or SOPUS products. I never have been much of a Castrol motor oil user, but for no particular reason.

First car that I wrenched on was my parents R16, and the manual recommended GTX 20W-50, which is what I started using.

When I got my own cars, it was Valvoline XLD (with a tin of STP) in all my "performance" engines...then Mobil 1 had a fair run, now whatever I think looks good at a reasonable price ($20/L isn't really that fair a price IMO).

For me it was Valvoline. I was a Mark Martin fan as a kid and my cousin's service station carried Valvoline in bulk.

Based on the responses, Mark Martin sold a lot of Valvoline.

My dad was a big quaker state user, so that is what I used as well.

Interesting about the NASCAR stories, as I started watching in 91 myself. (remember 92 as well!

) Watching it got me into Valvoline as well..

When I bought my first brand new car (a 1988 Dodge Shadow ES Turbo) the oil I used for most of the oil changes was Castrol XLR 10w30. I actually ran a couple of intervals with Mobil 1 5w30 back then, but at the time the only place I could get it was at Esso gas stations and it was $8 per liter, which was a big jump in price over Castrol XLR which was only $1 per liter. I was foolishly changing my oil every 3000 km back then, so the cost savings using $1 oil was substantial to me. I guess I chose Castrol because I liked their advertising back then, they made themselves sound like the oil of choice for hard working turbo engines (and I liked to drive that little turbo car quite hard!)

I only used Kendall back in the day and loved it on my cars. It was very inexpensive and easy to find. Now you can't find it anywhere in San Diego so I'm now using Napa oils.

My dad was a QS fan and later a Havoline man. My older brother, who as a young lad was my hero, used Pennzoil so my first love interest was Pennzoil. After the "wax" thing got started( i believed it then) i began using Valvoline. This was my oil of choice for two decades and for some reason i started dabbling with others including some synthetics, i found nothing better for my usage profile. I am now and have been for awhile back with Valvoline and not inclined to change again.

I agree with that now as well.

When I was a kid my older brother liked to work on cars/engines and always used Castrol. So when I got my first car that was the brand that I trusted as well. Used a lot of gtx and I have to admit that it never let me down (in the sense that I never lost an engine before the rest of the car was ready for scrap).

Later there was a real old mechanic that I used to take my car to. He didn't supply anything and would tell you what to bring - oil, coolant, plugs etc - whatever needed changing. He'd always say "and bring 5 liters of Castrol oil". Like always emphasize *Castrol*, so that kind of re-enforced my belief that it must be something special.

Then one day I brought in Valvoline (XLD) instead and I was kind of half expecting him to make a fuss about it not being the oil he asked for. Instead he just said: "ok, this will work fine too". So finally I asked him, so why do you always ask for Castrol oil then? He said it was just a brand he trusted because he'd used it for a long time. He admitted that there was nothing wrong with other brands, but he still preferred to stick with what had worked for him in the past.

My primary loyalty is to Mobil 1.

Two reasons:

1) They are a major sponsor/partner of my favorite Formula 1 team, McLaren.

2) They are the factory fill of my *dream dream* cars: AMG, Porsche, and Nissan GTR
