Oh man.....

Anyways, a neighbor of mine has decided to give synthetic a try in his 07 Malibu. He takes good care of his car, with 3K OCIs on the dot.

Funny part is that he refuses to spend money on oil, and does not do coupons or rebates. So, he has decided on two oils in his price range (please don't ask) Choices are:

ST 5w30 Syn

Wolf's Head full syn 5w30

Oh, he doesn't buy jugs either (not sure why)...

I say flip a coin (either should be fine for his 5k OCIs), what say you, BITOG?

Its only few dollar different we talking about here, peoples spend 3-5 dollar on water or coffee in the morning, why go cheap on oil that go 6+ month ? Tell him get of his cheap asss and get PP and Pure1 filter. or go with 14 dollar oil change at any oil change place. OR JUST IGNORE HIS CHEAP [censored] ( sorry im drunk, but i do say stray up wat im thinking, cant go cheap on oil that protect your engine ).

Hey Dave, I have an idea for you -- - - - -

Let him use the ST, and let him be happy with it. Easier on you, easier on him, and I can bet some money that his car won't have any lubrication-related issues while he owns it!

Oh, I'm not worried....I know either one will do just fine for his 2.2.....

He just asked me which one I thought was better...

Honestly either oil sounds just fine to me. The engine probably won't care, and it's certainly better than getting whatever bulk oil and no-name filter that a quick lube might use.

The only thing I don't get is the aversion to jugs. It's so much easier to pour the old oil into a big jug than a bunch of one quart bottles. I only use bottles if it is my only choice.

The newer (clear bottle) version of SuperTech synthetic is GM4718 approved, so it is OK for use in Corvettes.

I'd say it would be good enough for Mr. Neighbor as well.

Is anyone else here wondering why people make a fetish of price where the annual savings add up to an amount only slightly greater than zero?
There is the old saying, which I paraphase from Oscar Wilde:
"A fool knows the price of everything and the value of nothing".

If your friend is cheap, then why does he want to bother with synthetic? especially if he's doing 3-5K OCIs?

He has to make sense before he decides which course of action to take...

Of the 2 I would go with the Wolf's Head. I prefer Amalie made products to anything made by Warren.

Is he worried about additive clash? Why not turn him on to the world of rebates/clearanced syns? Or is he one of those super-tidy sorts who never has any inventory save for 1/2 quart left over from the previous change?

He's old and strange, and leave it at that.....
