A good medicated sinus spray. Yeah, take vitamins and get rest and all that [censored]. But use a good sinus spray that says not "to use it more than three days in a row". Target's house brand is great...

For a cold, I take zinc lozenges. I've noticed my colds have been cut short and not as bad when I take them. I guess it is similar in principle to Zicam. I drink chicken broth and take extra V C, too.

Now for actual sinus infections, I see the doc for an Rx.

I use the good old sinus rinse kit with the packet of stuff and the squeeze bottle. Up the nose with the warm solution a couple of times and repeat several times a day. When I worked as a pilot years ago it was the only solution that worked or I didn't work. I've always tried to stay away from antibiotics as much as possible and avoid pills like the plague. Treating symptoms without going after the problem was a process lost on me.

I used to avoid antibiotics too, then I learned that you don't become resistant to antibiotics the germs do whether you take them or not. Now I just avoid doctors, after all they are no different than greasy mechanics.

1. The 12 hour Sudafed behind the counter that you have to show your driver's license for.
2. Nasal spray with Oxymetazoline.

+12 on the spicy. Buffalo wings for me, so hot the following day on the can you should have errrrm, problems.

Clears anything stuffy immediately.

When I was a kid we were practically addicted to those Vicks inhalers. Where did they go?! Magic. You could put a hole in your brain if you weren't careful.

I have a Neilmed neti pot. I guess I like the goofiness. Also, it's what my ENT specialist recommended. Either way you get it up there, a sinus rinse is wonderful for cold or allergy congestion. I can't breathe without it. Just don't blow hard! You can really mess things up if you blow too hard with your sinus cavities full of salt water.

+1 on the Zinc tablets/Zicam/Cold Ease. I start these at the first sign of a cold and it's usually gone within a few days. It won't cure the common cold, but it certainly shortens it.

+1 - other things may help you feel better while dealing with a cold, but rest and drinking fluids is key to helping your body deal with the sickness.

You can still get the Vicks inhalers at Walmart. At least that is where I buy them, and they do help with congestion.

Some point many moon ago, they seemingly became less powerful. The ones when I was a kid probably caused brain damage they were so good.

Hey... Wait a sec

Problem with sinus infections is that if they go untreated they damage the sinus tissue and make you more prone to recurring infections. Best just to get a Zpack when you feel an infection starting and get it cleared up before it gets bad, often they don't fully clear up on their own and come back strong the next time you get worn down.

For a common cold or the flu, ther's two methods in the groups of people I know. One is to ride it out and hopefully feel better after 4-5 days and the other is to get completely whisky bent. Usually by the time the hangover wears off you feel pretty good, takes 1-2 days for that. For the congestion, sudafed (pharmacy counter stuff not the off the shelf variety) and horseradish will clear you up fast, get the hottest variety you can find.
