Top side oil change is what I'm after. And guys lets not argue about how long it takes for oil to warm up. When i normally do oil I drive the car for a good 10-20 min first and let it get nice and hot or when coming back from school usually does it. Anyways The only reason I asked was to do a top side oil change so that I don't have to deal with that [censored] oil filter.

If you didn't use Topsider oil changer yet and can return it, you should and buy a better one that will lasted 5-10 years or more. I have Mityvac 7201 8 years ago and still working great in doing oil change for my 3 cars, also do brake flush, ATF, PSF ...

Oh no sorry Its not the topsider. Ive read a few reviews and it seems the topsider and the liquivac are ok at best. some love em some hate em but not as much as the mityvac or others (some canadian one i cant remember begins with a P) anyways mine is the griots one dont know the OE but I figure if anything goes wrong I can always send it back. Gota love griots some time. Idk if they will charge me shipping tho i immagine they would.

This may just be the perfect application for a Form-A-Funnel. See sponsor link to the left. I got one at NAPA and it works great.
 
Another workable (and pretty cheap) way to deal with the filter mess problem is to place a plastic bag around the filter after you loosen it enough that you can unscrew it the rest of the way by hand. Once you're to that point, you put the bag on and go the rest of the way. Done with some care, virtually all the leakage will end up in the bag, not on your car.
 
ok guys so I got my fluid extractor yesterday and did the oil change today. Stuck the tube down the dipstick tube after driving the car a short distance (1-2 miles around the neighborhood to warm up the engine but not make it hot) and began sucking. It was a bit slower than draining but it was nice just being able to do it top side. I bet if I wasnt so interested in watching I could have started it. went inside and made a sandwich and come back to see it finish (perhaps 10-15min of draining)

But here is the part that concerned me. I got the griots fluid extractor http://www.griotsgarage.com/product/car+...vals&page=1 As far as i can tell each one of the ribs on the unit indicates a quart. By the time the unit had finished I had sucked up about 3 quarts maybe a tad more but not much. Into the unit. Pushed the tube all the way into the pan and pumped again and got nothing but air.

Filled the car up and it took almost all but the last quart of a 5+ penz platinum container. Now the car was low on oil. Probably the last dot or so on the dipstick (about 1/4-1/2" from the add line not the bottom of the stick. So it was probably close to about 3/4 quart low. And im assuming the rest of the oil was trapped inside the pump and filter assembly.

So is it an ok assumption to guess that i did ok and that by only getting out 3 quarts by using a fluid extractor was just fine? Will doing this be ok to run the car for another 5-6k?

With Mityvac fluid extractor I could get all oil out of my E430 all the time, better than drain plug. But sometimes I could only get 85-90% of old oil from my LS400 and S2000 with Mityvac, sometimes I could get almost all oil from LS400, depended on how the suction tube was inserted into the dipstick tube. I think the dipstick tubes of the MB engines was designed to be used with a fluid extractor.

You got only 3 quarts out and you need to fill the engine with 4 quarts to get to full line, it is okay if the sump capacity is 4-4.5 quarts. If the sump capacity is 5 quarts or more then this engine is not suitable for using fluid extractor to do oil change.
 
Id tell your girlfriend to take it to the dealer for a change. If you cant change the filter easily yourself then I wouldnt waste my time. I hate cars like that.

+1...I always put car on ramps and change oil + filter at the same time. Takes like 15 to 20 minutes and you can be assured you have done the job right!

Oh its not so much that i cant change the filter on this car. This is my 4th oil change or so on this particular car. But I had just gotten my fluid extractor so I figured I would give it a shot. The only hard part about this car is getting the filter off and its not that bad. Im going to try my flotool funnel next time.

But Im willing to bet that with the system being low and with only using the fluid extractor i probably got out about as much as i was going to. Because if you dont take the filter off isnt there oil trapped inside the filter and the pump assembly? Just curious.

You'll be fine. You've added 4 quarts of brand new oil to a 5 quart sump. Shorten the OCI to 80% of the recommended change interval to account for leaving 20% of the old oil in there.

Your fluid extractor + new filter every other change will bring the car to 400,000 miles.

The full drain and new filter every time will bring the car to 401,000 miles (But with more burning, itching and chafing).
 
This car sounds like a perfect example of where a high buck filter should be run, and used for two OCIs.
Still, you could drain the oil out through the drain plug.
You might get a little more out.
I doubt that the filter holds even half a quart, since most filters are pretty small these days.
 
yea im not really sure. Ive never measured how much comes out of the drain plug on this car. Im willing to bet not a whole lot more than i got out of the fluid extractor. Plus it was really nice being able to just drive the car in. Stick the tube down the dipstick hole and go to town. I figure dirty oil is the least of this cars problems right now.

Its a 99 malibu that desperately needs a radiator flush and fill and transmission fluid change, But i cant ever convince my gf to get the stuff to let me do it.

Does she regard the car as a beater, or is she looking to get at least a couple more years out of it.
You might explain to her the concept of pay me now or pay me (much more) later.
Maintenace is cheap, while repairs are expensive.
 
she likes it (im not a big fan of the car) As i said its a 99 malibu with about 95k on the clock. So its got a few more years on her if she keeps up with it.

But she is one of those girls where I do one oil change (1hour from start to cleanup) and i "have been working on cars all day" So its always hard to explain. So you know how it is. I always like to keep cars on the road as long as possible but in her eyes and my moms eyes its "dumping money into a car" When in my eyes is its simple Preventative Maintenance.

If its such a PITA just pay someone to do it. That's what I do with my sisters Sentra since I don't feel like crawling underneath it.
 
Sounds like you need a new GF. Not "letting" you do simple and necessary fluid flushes on HER car, and nagging you when you do a simple oil change, is not something I'd put up with. It simply shows a lack of matching perspectives and priorities, and those things should match in a relationship. I'm not a counselor, I just play on on BITOG.
 
I only change the filter every other time and then cut open the filter and check for any build up, never find more than a few grains of metal. I have a mityvac but it takes time to clean out the tubes afterwards, so I usually put the car on ramps and let it drain. I did my moms van oil a few weeks ago that had 9k miles on the honda oem filter and the filter looked fine inside, Blackstone lab reported very low insolubles in the oil, so the filter was doing it's job.
 
Filters are cheap so change it.The whole purpose of an oil change is to get rid of the old oil .If you leave on the old filter you are leaving old oil in the engine.For me this is a half assed way of doing things.Again,filters are cheap.

lol i have a similar situation at home. my women wont use the PYB she just bought because daddy says once you go syn you cant go back. fool. and i cant touch the car even though i paid for it. ya thanks.
