I have heard that engines with timing chains are hard on motor oil, was wondering why? (flakes of metal from timing chain / gear wear?)...what, in this case, is meant by "hard" on oil?

I think they produce higher FE in the UOA. Id imagine the shearing is not material to the overall oil condition. Catch 22 really.

Timing chains are one more thing to beat the oil up with.
And I believe it is a big cruncher/shearer in an engine, all things considered.
Oil pumps are another one, to me.

[Not that either of these systems are bad to have!]

I have two Cam timing chains in my engine and the oil doesn't seem to get "sheared" more and lasts a very long time according to my UOA's.

I know it's not the same as a timing chain but I should at least see some shearing of the oil I would think.
