Thoughts on 0W40 Mobil in Jeep 4.0L?

I have a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0L with 265,000kms. I have been running Mobil 1 Extended Performance full synthetic 5W30 in a few vehicles for several years now and i'm happy with its performance.

Even in a higher mileage daily driver Cavalier that's still running strong at 250,000kms with 100,000+ of those kms of longer interval oil changes during my ownership of the vehicle.

I have been reading up on the 0W40 Mobil 1 Synthetic and i'm wondering if during our harsh winter climates here in Ontario Canada if the 0W40 would be beneficial or would it be too thin for a 4.0L?

Any input would be appreciated.

Interesting. I was under the assumption that it would have to be thinner oil to retain the "0" portion of the formula for cold temperatures. I'm still learning.

First welcome to BITOG!

I don't know in what part of Ontario that you live but M1 0W-40 will be heavier than a synthetic 5w30 like M1 at all temp's at least down to -30C. So for Southern Ontario the 5w30 syn' will be lighter at all temp's you'll likely encounter.

BTW, the lightest 5w30 I know of is Pennzoil Platnium but if you want to make your own 0w30 which is lighter still on start-up you could go with with a 50/50 blend of M1 0W-40 and Toyota 0W-20 hat some members are using. See below:

M1 5w30 is a great choice and you did well using it. That said, some have indeed had great experiences running 40wt oils in the 4.0 engine... So there is merit in the consideration.

Will you see a practical difference at startup? As some said, the 5w- may be thinner at some relevant temps compared to the 0w-.

You may want to look at delvac 1/tdt 5w-40 as another option. Rotella syn 5w-40 has a good following, butnot sure if the cold start is right being up in CA.

Can you still get the Esso XD-3 syns?

With that kinda mileage I'd say the 0w40 would do just fine, your engines are plenty loose and the extra viscosity isn't gonna hurt.

You can always try a 0W30 grade oil. However, I suspect a Mobil 1 5W30, specially Mobil 1 EP series, is a more stout oil.

Thank you for all the input and suggestions thus far.

I may give the 0W40 a try. At worst I will run 5W30 EP Mobil in it.

I really appreciate the knowledge base on this forum.
