Video: BRZ/GR86 FA24 Oil Pressure Loss Demonstration
Here is an interesting test showing oil pressure drops in the newest generation of Subaru BRZ/Toyota GR86 with the newer FA24 engine. On a racetrack, using street tires, oil pressure was found to drop to as low as 20 psi at high rpm in right-hand turns. All of the cars tested were using 5W-30 oil and aftermarket oil coolers.
The oil pickup on these newer engines is off-center, which seems to be why the issue is only observed in right-hand corners. The high-flow oil pumps in these engines probably exacerbate the issue by lowering the sump level at high rpm. More testing is planned with baffles installed in the oil pan.
