Just returned from a 2 week, 5377 mile road trip from Wash. DC up through mid Canada.
Changed to MS5K 10W-30 with a (PL14477) Pure One filter just before the trip, replaced with MS5K 5W-30 after returning.
Consumed about 1 cup of oil. Car now has 41K miles on the clock.

For a road trip with limited cold starts, 10w-30 is the better choice.

My reasoning for 10W-30 is fewer viscosity "improvers"; less prone to shearing at high speeds and loads, cruising at up to 85mph for hours & climbing hills wide open in 4th gear.
The coldest start was about 60F, not a problem for a 10W.
It's still a 30 weight at operating temperature, so gas mileage doesn't suffer.
My worst mpg was 27.5, at a steady 85mph with AC.

+1 - from the OM:

Quote:
SAE 5W-30 is the best choice for good fuel economy, and good starting in cold weather. If SAE 5W-30 oil is not available, SAE 10W-30 oil may be used. However, it should be replaced with SAE 5W-30 at the next oil change.

You are correct.

Then why not just run an SAE 30?
