Had to head to Minnesota for a family function this past weekend so rental car was needed. Full size car booking through Delta.com after purchasing my tickets was stupid cheap at Duluth ($30/day+tax) so I went for it versus having family pick me up as I would be staying at the casino about 10 minutes away and didn't want them to have to shuttle me back and forth.

When picking up the car the agent offered me upgrade options but after I heard Altima I was not interested. Altima's have always proven to be excellent rental cars with excellent fuel economy (2.5 versions) and great comfort and ergonomics, not to mention I have had so many Altima and Sentra rentals over the years I am used to all the interfaces, buttons, etc. so like riding a bike it comes back to you pretty quickly. This newest generation has not departed from being an excellent rental car companion and I would not hesitate to pile miles on this driving it on a long distance trip.

Pros:

- Excellent fuel economy. On the mainly highway trip cruising from airport to my folks house with the cruise set to ~75-76 MPH I ended that trip with MFD indicating 40.2 MPG. After throwing some city driving in and a trip back to the airport I ended up at 31.7 MPG. As much hate as the CVT gets the cruising along at 75 MPH under 2k RPM or high idling along at 55 MPH gets some incredible fuel economy.

- Quick for the base engine. In the few weeks leading up to this I had a Malibu 1.5T with CVT and Fusion 1.5T with 6 speed auto. The Altima 2.5 CVT would smoke both of them easily at a stoplight race. Altima didn't require me rev its guts out and it moved quite nicely even when not pushing it.

- Excellent build, ergonomics and comfort. Have never had issues with any Nissan's with regard to build, ergonomics or comfort. Nissan definitely does all of this very well.

Cons:

- CVT. Count me as one who does not mind one bit how it drives and honestly I really enjoy the Nissan CVT and they have it programmed nearly perfectly - but I am still not entirely convinced of its longevity.

- Ride. This SR edition came with 18" wheels on low profile tires. This does not work well with north Minnesota frost heaved roads and ride was incredibly choppy and harsh. Not a problem with the car, just a mismatch of car model with local conditions.

- HVAC. Not sure if the car I drove had an actual problem but even on the lowest speed fan selection the volume of air coming out of the vents felt like it was stuck on ~50% even if clicking over to recirculate. Finally after day one I just set it blow at my feet and windshield so I wasn't having air just blasted in my face.

Overall:

- This is still one of my go to rental cars as it is so well rounded and the fuel economy in 2.5 trim is astounding. Of the rental queens (Altima, Fusion, Malibu, Sonata) I would pick the Altima every time, and honestly if purchase was a necessity and I had to pick I would roll the dice on the Altima even with the CVT (mind you I haven't driven the newest Sonata).

Thanks for the write-up!

I always liked the seating comfort, handling and braking of the entire Nissan line. Maybe not the previous gen Versa so much, but everything up.

I always enjoy Altima rentals. Regardless of price, it's second from the top of my list, above Maxima SL and Chrysler 300. I like the Altima's comfortable ride, responsive handling, strong a/c and it's impressive mpg. The infinity Q60 coupe is my favorite but I will never own a Nissan product due to their questionable reliability.

In 2017 I got a 2015(?) high mileage base Altima from Hertz Car Sales for a friend who is really hard on vehicles. Today that car has 155K; I have serviced the CVT 4 times, did plugs, filters and 5K OCIs. Set of StoneFire tires. Battery... Darn thing has never hiccuped. Great vehicle and Dan loves it.

I also rented a Altima 3 weeks ago. Lots of long distance cruising in the desert southwest.
I was thrilled to get an altima.
Its the anti SUV (full disclosure I own 2 SUVs)
Mine was on SV.
As soon as I saw yours was an SR I know what you would write about ride.
the SV however rides great.
The fashion of ever larger wheels i think has become counterproductive, luckily only the SR trim features oversize wheels on the Altima. All others are 17 (S, SV, SL)

I prefer the Altima over Camry, Accord and even Dodge charger ( thought charger is more fun... but the seats i altima are better and of course the mpgs are fantastic, its almost like the car makes its own fuel while you drive. :D )

Nissan is by far my favorite line of cars.

In terms of comfort and driving dynamics, I too like the Altima over the Carmy. In terms of sturdiness and longevity, nothing beats th Camry though. My 83yr/old mom's 2015 Camry is built like a tank in comparison to a Nissan product.

The 2.5 Altima can achieve 36 highway mpg at ...3 mph, well let's just call it faster then everyone else. And with 16+ gallons of fuel onboard and very comfortable seating in the higher trims, it makes for a superb businessman highway car.
Yup but another brand that does better is VW... Few talk about it but I agree on the Nissan..
What good is a high mpg car with bad seats? That is why I dumped my C Max...it was a torture chamber inside. Love Nissan seats

I put them in the same group as FCA/Stellantis....maybe a hair above.
Just curious if you work on a disproportionate amount of Nissans as compared to other brands.

There's a few techs with youtube channels that I enjoy to watch because of their troubleshooting and repair techniques, abilities and humor.

All of them will joke about Nissan, but yet they'll admit they don't have to work on many of them.

We mostly do performance work for a one Nissan platform, so sort of.

The owners of the "non-performance models" around here tend to be people who do not maintain their cars and honestly, run them to the ground. Also, Nissan's support for the aftermarket (from a tooling standpoint) is extremely poor compared to the competition.

Oh and before I forget.. I got 52 mpg (yes!) on a 105 mile desert highway drive, mostly with the cruise set to 56 mph in a 2021 Nissan Altima or me really feathering the throttle just to see what it would do in mpgs, when I saw hills where my foot would get better mpgs than the cruise control.
Halfway thru the drive I was at 56-57 mpg but then a stretch with more mild hills showed up and lowered my milage.

My wife’s 2020 Sentra gets 43-47mpg ac on 70+mph hwy cruises. Nissan has a great cvt not knowing you’d think it’s shifting gears. Plenty of pep handles well good infotainment and hvac controls. Only hiccup we have is the backup cam intermittently doesn’t work. “Got to schedule a service” otherwise Nissan makes a great vehicle.
