Hi folks, I posted a couple of months ago about the sorry condition of my 20 year old Lawn boy mower that I liked so much and that I was rebuilding it. Then I discovered that the crankshaft was sprung slightly and was the probable cause for the lower engine seal to be chewed up. I think the seal caused a exhaust side piston Siezure and the Piston ring was stuck in the land. I had already bought a rebuild kit off of Ebay which included a new piston, rings, wrist pin, seals, and gaskets. Then I found the sprung crank. I thought I might rebuild it anyway but it would just end up the same way in a short time. So I kept my eye on ebay and last week I found the right crank at a great price, ten bucks. When it arrived I checked it and all was OK, so I put it all back together and so far it's humming just like it used to. This time I'm going to keep and eye on the seals and other gaskets and I'm using Mobil one racing 2T at 32 to 1. Anyone else out there using this oil in their lawn boy? I've switched everything else over to Mobil one from Amsoil Saber and so far everything is running faster at idle and has more power with the Mobil one.

Umm..Lawn boy recommends an Ashless oils for that application. MX2T is not an Ashless oil. Ash oil like MX2T don't clean that well at steady RPMs especially plugs. Its is the same reason they do not use Ash oils in boat motors and piston driven aircraft.

I am using Amsoil Sabre in my Lawn-Boys and it works well. I am mixing @ 50:1. Before this year I was using Amsoil 100:1 oil mixed @ 80:1. I did this for 6 years with good results.

Hirev, I know that lawn boy recomends an ashless oil and that MX2T is a low ash oil, however Blano and another person said it is clean burning. He also said that the most trouble would be that I might need to replace the spark plug more often than normal. Also wouldn't a leaf blower need an ashless oil because of the steady RPMS? I don't see Manufacturers recomending Ashless oil for blowers. I was wondering if anyone had a couple seasons with MX2T in a lawn boy and a teardown to take a look? Thanks for your input.

I use MX2T at 32:1

I have five season's on one lawnboy and almost one season on another. Both run excellent and have not given me any trouble starting. The former now does not lose power after running for an hour or more in thick grass.

Whether this is related to the new oil or not I cannot say for sure. But this is the only variable that was changed.

I've heard of people going 20 years using Lawn-boy oil when I asked my dealer about the oil. He stated its bad to run the Lawn-boy 2-stroke mowers out of gas because they get poor lubrication in such use.

I've been running MX2T mixed 40-1 in my 10yo Lawn Boy since late last year. So far so good running it 3+ hours per week during the midwest mowing season. It smokes a bit at startup, probably becasue I prime it a lot, but after that it seems to run really clean.

Drive it forever - it's bad to run any premix 2 cycle out of fuel since when the fuel stops the engine goes lean burning off any boundry layer on the moving parts. When there's no fuel, there's also no oil...

MX2T will burn really clean in a lawnboy mower. In my Toro snow thrower(shares the same motor with only a few changes)the issues I encountered where after long time use and where solved completley with a new plug.

Thanks for all the replies, it looks like my rebuilt Lawn boy will be getting a steady diet of MX2T for a long time as I just scored 10 pint bottles at my local AutoZone for a buck a bottle! They were clearing them out and the manager made me a deal.

I have been using 50:1 mixture of Mobil MX2T(now Mobil Racing 2T) in my Lawnboy V series engine (1996 year) starting last fall without issue. I also run the same in my other 2 cycle lawn equipment. 21 inch Toro with Suzuki engine, Redmax blowers(2) and stick edger. All the equipment seems to run great with this oil.

Slick, thanks for the input. I picked up a used lawnboy with the 6.5 hp duraforce engine that I will be putting into service also with Moble 1 oil. So far so good, the mowing season is just getting a good start here.

Jsharp,

The reason it smokes at start up is because when you shut it off after the last time of use, some of the oil drained down to the bottom of the crankcase and then was washed out by the new fuel oil comming in when you started it the next time. This will happen to all two-cycle engines and if you think about it it is really a good thing because your engine can use the extra oil at start up to help lube the cold and dry engine. This does not happen unless you let it set for a bit like overnight, or you would see it smoke more after that iced tea brake half way through mowing the lawn.

Lawn-Boy genII is NMMA TCW III certified so it meets specs. I can get it pretty cheap and in a convienent 2 gallon mix can as well. I am on my 4th year with no problems on the LB oil, my dad is of 25 years on LB oil--I think it just fine, but would use any ashless and TCW III approved oil.

"The reason it smokes at start up is because when you shut it off after the last time of use"
Thats acctually not true.
The reasona two strokes smokes at startup is because the engine sint hot enought o vaporise the fuel. Fuel in liquid form can not be combusted. As a result of the cold engine temps a large quantity of unburnt or partially burnt fuel/oil make it out the exhaust.

A better test would be to take a new engine with no residual oil in it and start it. Then let it cool down completley(overnight) and start it again. the results will be the same.

Blano,

Your response makes some since so I devised a plan to test it out. First I warmed up my engine and ran it for a while, then shut it down and forced cooled it with a fan until it was room temp. Then I started it up using the cold start method and yes there was some smoke. However only about half as much smoke as when I repeated the test with a cold engine that sat overnight. So I guess both reasons may be correct. Oh, my mix is premium 91 octane gas and 4 oz. of Mobil 1 MX2T to the gallon (32 to 1) and 1/2 oz stabil. Blano, I appreciate your comments and I agree with you 99% of the time.

How about when you start it you primed it with LIQUID mixture (not sucked in and vaporized at all,but a teaspoon of wet fuel which makes the mixture way rich. About oils: I have never owned a mower except Lawnboy. Right now I have 2. A 1975 and my "new" one I have owned for 12 years,1981. I have used Wal-mart 2 cycle oil since available. It's $5.67 a GALLON! I haven't rebuilt either mower,no smoking and I change plugs about every 2-4 years. When I have cleaned the exhaust port (recommended every 50 hours) it's pretty clean and that side of the piston I can see looks great. We have really sandy soil here in Florida so I changed out my stock air filters for a homemade one made out of a good quality yellow sponge. I'm sure the M 1 is a good oil and you use so little even an expensive oil is overall cheap.I just really love the Wal-mart and this may sound funny but it smells really potent. Whatever is in it it is strong, burns ashlessly, gives great wear protection and is cheap.
