I bought a 1998 Prizm with 73,000 miles and I plan on doing my first oil change soon. I know the Prizm is basically a Corolla for the most part so I was wondering what Prizm/Corolla owners might suggest for an oil filter in this application and why? Thanks.

It also depends how many miles you will do on your oci. If you are only going a few 1000mi then try the supertech at wally world. One of the best would be a wix. It's your choice.

Yes, 92. As uconn1150 says, it depends on your annual mileage and the length of your OCI.

If you're doing lower annual mileage ...and multiple OCIs ...cheap everything.

Longer mileage and longer OCIs ..go large on both if you so desire.

I've had great luck with Purolators, 14476 or the longer 14477. The 14477 might be iffy since on your Prizm, the filter is under the engine in a vertical position. IMO, having the filter in this position with the inlet/outlet facing up negates some of the value of a silicon antidrainback valve.

In all honesty, I really like the Champion labs based filters in this application because of the way the bypass valve is. Supertech 4967 is a great filter and super cheap.

But like Gary Allan indicated, if you want to go long on oil changes, I'd go with a Mobil 1 EP filter, also made by Champ.

I ran a '98 Corolla since new, just gave the car to my son and his family.
Used NAPA silver filters on it, well over 100k miles and no oil burning. Dino oil changed at 6,000km OCI's.

For 3-5k intervals the supertech is a good value. I am running pure one 14477 as I got two for the price of one, but I did run a supertech 4967 and have several on hand

You can probably go oversize with the 3614 or longer 3600. The gasket diameter is a bit bigger so make sure that fits your block. Did on my 95.

The excellent Motorcraft FL400S was my choice for the Corolla. It is oversized though, but it brought my oil fill quantity to an even 4 qts, which I liked.

That depends on what your definition of a "good fit" is... :) Lets just say for the PH3600/FL400S size, the 1.8 has the room for the length and does not leak. The gasket size is just small enough to catch the inside 1/2 of the gasket. I've used probably 20 between the two Prizms I've had and no leaks with that size.

I started using the SuperTech ST3614 on my R-22 2.4L 87 Toyota Pickup (220,000 miles) this year. This filter has very quite start-ups with no lifter rattle.

I use the Supertech filter from Wal-Mart with excellent UOAs. The Insolubles are real low and every one I have used I cut open are perfect.

If Toyota thought that a larger filter was needed, they would have recommended one.

I checked Champion Lab site and they do make a filter for the 98 Corolla 1.8L engine, PH2840, so SuperTech (Mfg by Champion) may be on the shelf @ WalMart, check their crossover book. There is another fellow that post on this site that can come up with SuperTech numbers (Champ).

I use a 1996 Geo Prizm LSi to teach driver education in. It currently has 209,000 miles and doesnt burn any oil in between oil changes. I recently started changing the oil myself and used Wal-marts super-tech oil filter (for $2.87!) and 5 quarts of Valvoline maxlife 5w30. I run 5000 miles between oil changes.

It works well on Mazdas too if you can find them.

Not sure if you get the same deal as here, but I found that PepBoys run deals on Purolator once in a while and I have gotten 1c per filter after rebates a few times.

The good thing is that Purolator seems to use the same exterior size as OEM so the filter wrench cap still fits.
