OK, the reason for the weirdness here is that I took my car in to a Subaru dealer for a late 90kmile service and also asked them to change the plugs (which were changed at the 40kmile LSPI recall) and replace the PCV valve. I asked to NOT change the oil and they did it anyway...I guess I wonder if they may have "had" to change the oil with what it takes to do the plugs on these boxer engines, but they didn't mention anything to me when the service was being planned. Anybody who pays any attention to my posts here knows that I like to obsess about LSPI, and the only info I could find about Idemitsu 5W30 suggested that it is high in calcium. As I drove back to work after picking the car up waiting for me engine to grenade itself (hee hee, I'm exaggerating a bit), I pondered how to approach this unexpected situation.
I knew that it was going to bother me to have this oil in my car long term, and I knew I had a handful of random quarts of what I thought was "safe" oil in the garage...and I also had noticed that Target was clearing out M1 quarts. I decided to pick up a couple of clearance M1 5W30 quarts at Target, use my extractor to take out as much of the Subaru oil as I could, and refill with my quarts. I wanted to do an intake valve cleaning with my Subaru tool/fluids before long anyway and always like to change the oil right after that, so I did just that after about 1000 miles on the brew and got back on my usual oil change schedule (every 5000 miles). Before putting the 10W30 in, I pulled the plug as usual and did a full drain.
I know plenty on here will think/say I'm being obsessive-compulsive about this as well as being wasteful...they're probably right, but I did it anyway and worried less as a result (I am a bit OCD, I admit it).
Oh, another weird thing was that the dealer dumped fuel injector cleaner in the tank even though it was only about 1/3 full. I filled it up on the way home from work after noticing the item on their bill, seems like a strange thing to do without telling me. I know some people run concentrated doses of FIC and I doubt that it hurts anything....but, IDK, what if I had maybe 1/10th of a tank? Would they have done the same thing in that case, and would that have been a problem? Can you run a car on straight FIC?
