Don't remember my first oil change, but probably used Shell X-100 because that's what Dad used.

Got a job one summer working for NationWise Auto Parts (now defunct) and started using Havoline. Why? Because when one of the round metal cans of Havoline got punctured, it stunk-up the whole store. No other brand smelled so strong, so I figured it must be good oil. Not kidding.

Oh to be young again. My wife says I'm still just as stupid....

First car was a 1991 Mustang GT and I ran M1 10w30. That was back in 1995 and have been running M1 almost 99% of the time.

Toward the end of my time with that car, I was using Castrol GTX, again either 10W-30 or -40.

At various times I added Marvel Mystery Oil and Bardahl Top End Oil to the crankcase. Nothing terrible ever happened, except that my wallet was a little flatter.

I'd imagine that even with that guarantee, a LOT of people changed that STP 10W-50 oil out at 3-5k. If it had enough detergents (IF) to get close to 15k, it probably did a pretty good job when changed at 3-5k.....

Couldn't even tell you. Any cheap brand I could find, which is what I should be using now!! LOL

My first car was a 1970 VW Beetle. No filter, just a screen.
Mainly used Sears Spectrum 10w40 because it was "Sears Best".
I remember dumping in several loads of Royal Triton 10w30. I thought the Purple Color was cool. Have no idea if it was anu good.

I would buy 10w-40 Gulf by the case for my 1969 Chevy Nova. I liked those recyclable round cardboard cans you had to open with a church key.

65 Buick Electra 225, 410 Nailhead. Have to think hard back to 1973, but mainly Quaker State 10w-40 and sometimes Gulfpride.

my first car back in high school was a 74 datsun 260z and i remember using castrol syntec.i thought it was real synthetic and i don't mean the american legal definition.

i bought into it because of all the "made for high revving cars" advertising.

castrol, along with others, are the major contributors to my massive disbelief of ALL advertisements.

i have NEVER used a castrol product since then, even if some are excellent.(and have moved away from M1 regardless of other peoples opinions and specs, they have too much wiggle room)

i also tend not to trust the "big boys".

....so,thank you castrol.

your mileage(results/opinions)may vary.

If it had the odd fire Buick 231 V-6,thats why it blew. They were weak motors.

No it was the 4cyl. I remember buying a quart of that graphite oil and putting it in there when it was low one time, I have no idea what else was in there either.

My first car was 1960 Dodge Sennaca slant six. Used QS and gunked up the engine bad. Switched to Valve in about 68 and was a little better but the big change came in 78 when I went with M1 and never looked back.

This is an interesting thread.

My first brand NEW car was a 1979 Datsun 310GX that I bought off the showroom floor.

During the break-in period, until 10,000 miles, I used Cam-2 Small Car 10W-40.

Then, around 10K miles, I started using Mobil 1 5W-20. For those of you that didn't know, Mobil 1 started out as a 5W-20. I tried it after using it in my parent's 1977 Buick Electra.

The Mobil 1 5W-20 turned out to be a bit too thin, and I was burning some of it. So I switched to Amsoil 10W-40.

I also took care of my parent's vehicles. The first was a 1975 Buick Apollo with the odd-firing 231 V-6. This was my first introduction to a GM engine with piston-slap. It sounded like a diesel when started cold. We used Quaker State Super Blend 10W-30 in that.

Mobil 1 5W-20 in the Buick Electra.

Around that time I also started playing around with Used Oil Analysis. Blackstone wasn't around then - I used Analysts, Inc., and still use them on occasion.

My first car was a 1989 escort gt 5 spd

As hard as I ran that car I cannot remember even changing the oil!

Next was a 80 monte carlo and I remember only using VWB for a couple years.
