Oil Change in my G8 yesterday - w/Pics!

I figured I should answer some questions........

ArcoGraphite, I wasn't sure what was under there until I put the car up on the ramps. So, I know the incline of the ramps would cause a little bit of oil to be stuck in the engine. But I was able to get 8.5 qts back into the engine to get it to the full mark. So, 0.3 quarts or 9 oz of old oil was still in there. I think next time around I'll only lift the right side of the car. That way the oil will move more toward the drain plug.

Lexus114, the engine in the G8 is an LSx series engine. In my case it's the L76 which has the Active Fuel Management system where 4 of the cylinders shut off in light load conditions. The GT pumps out 361hp. The LS3 used in the GXP version cranks out something like 403hp I believe? But that engine loses the AFM system. I'm assuming the oil pan/filter location would be similar to LS1, LS2, LS3, L99, etc. engines.

CChase, there's no skid plate on the G8. The front cross member does sit lower than the pan though. Also the front nose is super low on the G8. My low profile ramps gave me about 1/2 inch of clearance under the bumper. Maybe GM figured the combination of those two would protect the pan?

And yes I would suspect those Aussie GTOs had to be wicked quick. Early ones had the 5.7L LS1 engine and the later ones upgraded to the LS2 with 400hp. And you could get that with a 6-spd manual.

Very cool, 10,000 should be a breeze.

Garlicbreadman, those quart size bottles were puchased back when I had my WRX for an oil change where I ended up using a different oil. After reading several UOAs showing that the WRX turbos would beat up 5W-30 oils pretty quickly to a 20 weight range, I decided to switch over to Shell RTS 5W-40. The 5W-30 bottles just sat in my closet. I'm estimating they're 3-4 years old. I gave 'em a good shake before I poured them into the sump.

It would be a nice place for an oil filter but I would have liked it up a little higher to put a longer filter on. That is the same filter my little achieva and buick century uses. I have room to put a wix filter that is twice as long though. Since they are the same price I am much happier putting the longer filter on.

I do the same thing with my GTO...makes for an easy and quick change out. Wish we had that 8.8 qt sump, instead of our "measely" 6.5 qts.

Nice G8 SuperEd! Is that about the most solid car you've ever owned? No sqeaks, no rattles...just a solid, firm car. Screws everywhere instead of clips...built to go the distance IMO. Enjoy!

Well I can't say the car has been perfect. I ran into problems with the lower control arms/ball joint combo going bad due to defective grease boots. Pretty well known issue on the G8 forums. But overall the car is definitely tight. Very quiet. Almost too quiet. I would've preferred a bit more exaust note but I can get around that. So far, body hardware has been fine. No squeaks/rattles to speak of. I do plan to keep it a long time so hopefully it holds together for the long term.

I think they like a lot of north american cars (or should I say cars manufactured by companies with headquarters in north america), but their british automotive inferiority complex won't let them admit it. Since it is made in one of the colonies, it is exempt from the blanket hatred of north american cars regardless of their abilities/performance/quality. Another good example of this is the Ford GT. They are permitted to like this car because it is a reproduction of the ford GT40, which had a significant portion of british origin/connection.

You might just be onto something here.

I wonder if it ever did work the other way for them i.e.; did they hate on the Escort Cossie RS/WRC because it had a Blue Oval badge in the grill, despite being a mostly Brit car??

They got burned royally when they let engines in with 1qt/1000 miles of "acceptable" oil consumption into a market that has traditionally considered 1 litre per 5,000km to be worn out.

Commodores were emptying the sump between services, leading to warranty issues, and prompting shorter dipsticks and bigger sumps.

Actually, I was stunned to read that burning a quart in +/-600 miles in a Porsche v8 was acceptable (per Manual).

The GTOs are Monaros, unless you could not purchase those in the north country?
