I got home tonight ok. I learned a trick. when I'm in 2nd gear, I start to see the RPMs climb up, I take the foot off the gas pedal for a second, then hit it. I'm able to get into third gear. But that's alot of trouble in rush hour traffic.

I took this immediately after driving ten miles. How's my trans fluid blotter card look?

Fluid appearance isn't that critical unless it appears that the fluid has been contaminated with something such as antifreeze.

The blotter looks fine. Would think that if the tranny filter was plugged, the fluid would look a lot worse (the nastier fluid causing the plugging).

I would suspect the shift controller. Someone posted possible reasons for late or not shifting. Need to know what kind of controller your tranny has. My old '92 Aerostar has a vacuum shift modulator and if I unhook the vacuum line it absolutely won't shift out of first gear. But I don't think many cars still have vacuum modulators. That's like 1970s and older type technology.

I guess the tranny shop test drive is a good idea. Don't have to get it fixed right away by them, but at least get their opinion. Or your regular mechanic's opinion.

I was able to find automatic tranmission diagnosis in my manual.

No 2-3 shift or 2-3 shift delayed:

Inspect: oil level, TV Valve, Manual Linkage, Governor, Intermediate Servo, Accumulator Exhaust Check Valve, Case, case cover, thottle lever and bracket assembly, TV link, Control Valve Assembly, Spacer Plate, Case to Governor Shaft sleeve, Direct Clutch.

Wow! Everything but overhaul the transmission.

Well, check the easy ones first to rule them out before doing the more complicated ones.

I just dropped the pan, changed the trans fluid and filter using valvoline maxlife ATF. The magnet in the pan didn't have any metal shavings. There was dirt at the bottom of the pan. I haven't drove the car yet though. I was heavily tempted to add seafoam, trans-x, or risolone trans treatment. But I got a bottle of lubegard that says "prevent hung governors". But it doesn't hurt to try..
Some guy left a comment here that it worked.

It maybe a placebo effect, but in four days of driving, I believe the trans is shifting better.

Not always...could be a number of issues.

That issue was your trans talking "time to trade me in".

I just realized I have Valvoline AC 5w30 in the engine and Valvoline Maxlife ATF in the trans.
