I really don't think major oil companies would stand for quick-lube places going under, most notably Jiffy Lube. J.L. is owned (through a few subsidiaries) by Shell, so they've got pretty strong help in their corner.

Don't throw stones if you live in a glass house...

Naw, you won't have to go to the dealer to top your oil off - just get a hole saw and cut through the dash into the engine compartment and use a long stemmed transmission funnel to pour the oil into the engine!!

I can't count how many times I've read here "My engine used X amount of oil for X amount of miles. So we are going to have to go to the dealership of top off the oil too? I can't imagine that. No one would be able to get their cars serviced UOTE]

Mexicans do it all the time here.

Yep. I see it done a lot here in the "big box" store parking lots.

It is illegal.

You can't force people to ONLY go to the dealer.

Too many people believe a lot of junk statements without doign some research.

Hey People: 1. This was started by a GM mechanic
at a Chevy Dealer. 2. I not a Hillbilly and
I don't come from California where 99% of this
envirmentalist ** comese from. 3. I don't agree
with it as I change my oil every 2000 miles.
4. And to moribundman: I certainly am NOT a Republican
5. This is simply what I was told and thought
that I would pass it on

Yeah, sounds like the thinking of greedy neoconservatives.

What a waste.

The front end was similarly sealed and would have required a mechanic to disassemble it even for oil and coolant topping and changes. The car had an oil level sensor and the oil was supposed to be changed only every 50,000 km (31,000 miles). . . .

Oh, brother. Female engineers? What's next -- devices in cars to put your makeup on for you?

Western civilization is doomed.
.

Why not men designe cars for men. There are 51% of female on this planet. Might as well do it.
And yes, I'm male.

Unless the 2000mile change interval is for a heavily raced engine or one made for exptremely high performance, any credibility about oils is right out the window there.

The oil companies just LOVE people like you to line their wallets.

Not possible. Stealerships lack the capacity to service all of the cars they sell.

The average buyer will not know that. A lady I work with bought an 06 Sonata V6 and claims the only place she can have the oil changed is at the dealer because "the oil filters aren't available anywhere else." It's just a cartridge type filter!

She is right about the filter part...it is only availble at the Stealership.

The first and most complete ban on "servicing" AC systems was actually a ban on buying the refrigerant because of the DEA. It was used to condense Crack Cocaine, and that was the driving force behind licensing. Then, along came the global warming adn ozone problems that refrigerants received the blame over. Then, it has been a done deal ever since.
