My 95 bmw auto trany has no dipstick to check fluid. IMO (and to every BMW enthusiust)it was/is a dumb idea. Caused a lot of trany failures.

I have heard of the "sealed engine" concept for some time now. Doubt if we will see it anytime soon. perhaps when we change to differenttype of power sources.

BUBBA - do what I did - find someone who will use your oil so you can keep changing at 2,000 miles

. I like to change my oil at 3,000-5,000 miles. My dad takes my oil and puts it in his beater and runs it for another 5k.

Justifies doing short OCIs. hehe

wow. I caused a big stick about no DIY oil changes in SD. I don't know if it's true or not. I can't find info on it. It's just hear say from a car buddy. I doubt that it's true but I could see them passing a law like that.

Many top end housing developement restrictive contract covenants prevent any residential auto maintenance especially in driveway...
watch out for the gated entry club commie babushkas' grandmas turing your greasy butt in to the covenant police

This all sounds familiar. In the 1960's when Chrysler first tried 50K mi. warranty they tried to tell everybody that the service had to be at the dealer and it didn't stick. It got modified to documentation in the form of reciepts required.

I can see On-star getting involved in other ways too. On-star knows where you're at, no matter where you go, right? I can see law enforcement teaming up with a system like on-star. I have no problem with that. Wake up earlier to get there in time, abide the traffic law (and the Law in general), if you feel like Formula 1 pilot- go to the track and show what are you capable of there.

There's no way in **** anything like this would ever happen because there would be way too much uproar about it. There's no way I'm paying some stealership $100 an hour for something I do myself for nothing. I would find away to do it myself, even if it were made illegal!

My sister lives in a neighborhood (far north Atlanta) that prohibits vehicle maintenance in the driveway....if you do it, you have to do it in the garage with the door down. I think the only exception is if you get a flat tire in your driveway, when you're allowed to jack it up and change it.

That shouldn't be problem except for a complete mporon, because a person would have to be moron to buy a house without reading the conditions they are agreeing to when they buy the house.

No one can tell you that you cannot work on your own vehicles in your own driveway unless you signed something at the start stating that you can't.

Regardless, it would be hard for any of them to enforce it.

My sister didn't elaborate on the penalties, since she isn't really affected by them...she's not likely to crawl under her truck for any reason beyond retreiving her dog's toy.

I can only assume that it could lead to a nasty letter from the city, or possibly a citation.
