No More DIY Oil Changes

It may be a joint effort between the tree huggers and the professionals. I doubt they will be able to cut out the Iffy lubes.

No problem with the oil burners. Just go to a shop and pay them $10-$20 to top up your car. Besides, the tree huggers would like to get the oil burners and leakers off the road.

A friend of a friends x-husbands wife who knows a friend of a mechanic who works for a friend who owns a buddies dealship who heard from a friend who knows a guy at the manufacture who has a buddy in marketing and her x-husband knows a guy heard a rumor from a sources buddy in the government.........it will be against the law to change our engine oil because we'll be required to ride the bus.

No really...I'm serious....serious I cant believe I wasted my time making that up and actually typing it.

In Germany, during the mid-80s, VW announced they would soon have cars with sealed engine compartments. They public's outrage was appropriate and the suggestion was never again to be heard. I'm sure it's an industry dream, though. The carmakers are trying more than ever to make drivers go to an authorized dealership. Manus manum lavet.

Now that I can believe.

Even if this were true they'd have to sell "top off" oil for cars that burn it.

Yeah, especially when the manufacturers' claim that a quart in 1000 miles is normal.

many extended warranty contracts now have a clause requiring certified shop service and repair....

also most lease agreements now require certified shop service and repair

Joe Smuck's Greasy Street Service and Windshield Cleaning is old school out...

VW's have a sealed transmission though. Only $tealer have the key.

I don't know why you claim that. You can buy the proper bits at any parts store that carries them, or you can buy them from the dealer (at dealer prices). I had no problems finding them.

I don't belive in that statement. Thats the sounds and working of a fascist communist government. And besides, if it did lead to that, thiers no way in ****, all dealers could handle the flow of cars, minivans, trucks, you name it!, That would mean, gas stations would pretty much not be able to perform them anymore, and buisness like jiffylube, and AMMCO would go out of busness. That makes no sense. IT would be VERY UN_AMERICAN

....and that would also mean, just about all but one or 2 brands of oil would dissapear forever, form the market, as well as auto stores, like NAPA, autozone, advanced auto, carquest, and the liking..

Exactly my point, no way would evern the stupidist of Democrats, eliminate that many industries and jobs for small businesses.

I wonder if San Diego prohibited oil changes in the street. How many folks just drop the drain plug, let the oil drain into the storm sewer, replace the plug and refill?

How would such an ordinance be enforced?

Are they going to go door to door, with search warrants looking in garages for oil change supplies.

The City of San Diego isn't capable of pulling off a ban like that...they would be waaaaay to busy fighting between all of the different departments about who gets all of the bribes & kickbacks, sorting out the accounting, hiring big firms to audit their book keeping, suing the big firm that did the audits, recall elections over the whole mess...

Don't ask me how I know...

In the not too distant future [5 -7 years] you can expect to see an engine with ceramic bearings and about 1/3 the oil capacity that engines have now. The model is for that oil to last for the life of the engine, along the lines of gear lube in rear axles of older cars, the oil which nobody ever changed.

fred, this board doesn't have a spell check feature per se. However, moribundman will sniff out misspelled words from miles away. His nickname isn't 'bloodhound' for no reason!

I can't count how many times I've read here "My engine used X amount of oil for X amount of miles. So we are going to have to go to the dealership of top off the oil too? I can't imagine that. No one would be able to get their cars serviced.
