So I am looking at an John Deere X330 with the Kawasaki and a Husqvarna YT42DXLS also with the Kawaski

They're all consumer-grade junk unless you go commercial. Seriously, don't expect any more than 10 years out of this purchase.

Get the biggest deck you can afford. Some people swear by zero-turn mowers but unless you have a lot of trees they are kind of a waste of money.

Hydrostatic is fine.

Do not, under any circumstances, finance a lawn mower.

A good used Kubota will often be worth (several years later) near what you paid, if you take care of it. I've actually bought & made profit on used Kubota's.

The X350 is around 3K new.

Local JD dealer has $3200 on the 350. Also has a used one with some paint damage for even more(?)
The 350 series has a heavier frame and a heavier transmission as well as Kawasaki engines (except the 330).
Consumer reports rates the JD 300 series as one of the best.
Husqvarna still has the gas tank up front right next to the engine.
Not cool.
Worth the extra cost, IMHO.

My 2¢

I have an X300 and have been very happy with it.
Not that it will help the OP, but winter is the best time to buy.
An X350 could be had around here for $2700 earlier in the year with factory rebate from Deere.

The X330 has a Briggs and the X350 has the Kawasaki. The Kawasaki is well worth the extra money, IMO.

I am scared off all the new ones. My old mower has a traditional gearbox and I am not sure how I feel about Hydrostatic drive.

Craftsman still offer the Peerless 6 speed manual trans:

If want to try something else go with the fast auto version, it uses a CVT and is much tougher than the hydro trans.

Sold it back in 2009 and it never had any issues.
Only routine maintenance performed.
It's changed hands at least 3 times since is sold it, but it's still going strong .
Currently cutting two acres at least once a month.
No issues with the Hydro Trans ever.

I have a Husqvarna 22 HP 46 inch, and have mowed my lawn with it for about 110 hours and have never had an issue with it.

My in-laws have had the low end John Deere D110 with 19 HP single cylinder Briggs for going on ten years now, mowing 3/4 acre. No complaints there, other that wishing they had opted for a slightly more expensive V-Twin model.

I myself am now 2-1/2 seasons into a John Deere D140 with the 22 HP V-Twin, mowing a similar 3/4 acre. I have no complaints either. Many of the "cheap" comments you read here on BITOG are bordering on silly. A favorite one of mine is the complaint about the hood being plastic. Seriously? Do you plan to stand on the hood to clean your windows or something?

$2000 for a lawn tractor that will last ten years comes to $200/year without considering the time value of money. It's even less when you factor in a discount rate.

The plastic doesn't bother me. My old guy is all plastic.
I do want a better deck and 2 cylinder.
The Briggs I have now has been a flawless 2 cylinder.

Went and looked at a Husqvarna YT42DXLS.
Fabricated steal deck, Kawasaki 21.5 HP and locking rear diff. I like those things.

2645.95. Compared to the other 42 inch mowers I saw with 2 cylinders for 1999 to 2800. I think this maybe the one.
3 year bumper to bumper warranty
5 year frame
limited lifetime on the deck.

LOL sorry. How about this? https://www.mowersdirect.com/Husqvarna-960-43-01-83-Lawn-Mower/p12258.html

I like that one. I guess I should have mentioned I want to stay at 42inch.

You may ask "Mike why 42inches? Bigger is better!"

When the original owner of the house put in the chain link fence, the gates were based off a mower with a 42 inch beck.

ok look at these https://www.mowersdirect.com/quick_search.php

I had a Murry 38" mower with a B&S 12 HP single that lasted 10 years and now a neighbor uses it. I now have a John Deer L111 42" with a B&S 20 Twin that that has about 130 hours on it. A nice big box John Deere that is a good sturdy mower for~$1,900. Grease fitting on wheels and front axle. Craftsmen has a nice line of mowers in the 42in category that have a good reputation also. Consumer grade junk comments are foolish unless comments without merit. Ed
