He has 230k on an old Ford Bronco which he takes off roading all the time... Says he has had the covers off on several occassions and the motor is spotless, and all he uses is conventional Valvoline 10W30 since new. Valvoline does advertise quit a bit, but the don't seem to go into engine cleanliess claims as all the other brands do in their commercials and when you read the back of the bottle, it says nothing, or rather..not very much about the benefits of using it.
Other brands go into how good it is for stop and go driving, short trips, no sludge, etc.. So, I was wondering if it is considered to be a sleeper oil because of that? Exxon Superflo is another one that comes to mind when I think of "lack of advertising"...

Yeah, perhaps because they do advertise too much to be called a sleeper oil...but when they do, they really don't go into the benefits of using it so much. As an example, the new Pennzoil campaing claims if you sue their oil you will "feel the clean".

Yeah he's got his own little piston running off the magic juice in the engine, lol! All while some feel-good music is thumpin...

A sleeper oil would be something from say Schaeffers who most folks have never heard of. Schaeffers does not advertise much and besides the chatter around here about how good it is there is no hype. But probably one of the best out there for the money.

Don't think I'd call it a sleeper oil, they just don't need to "hype" the attributes of their oil like other companies feel the need to. My family has been using it decades with nothing but excellent results.

It's a very good oil, as your friend (and many others) have learned from experience over the years...

I use it in my sister's car. No issues so far. Her car sees severe service so I drain it fairly regularly. 5w30 for the record.

The only sleeper valvoline is maxlife full synthetic :) Great for the dollar. The other oils are good, but are not sleepers.

Nothing sleeper about Valvoline. They are as good as any other oil maker out there.

My elderly friend had used regular Valvoline since before I was born...and he has been wrenchin' for over 60 years.
His 1969 327 is now in a 1980 Monte Carlo (I think that is the year), which is the fourth car the engine has seen.

It was rebuilt once, yet looked pretty good...and currently runs beautifully.

Nothing wrong at all with Valvoline.

One of the good things about Valvoline is you can get a 5 qt jug at Wal Mart for $9.99.
Throw in a Motorcraft, AC Delco, or ST filter, add tax, and you've got a top-o-the-line oil change for under 15 bucks...

One of the largest quickie-lube retailers is hardly a "sleeper."
