My Dad swears by putting a quart of MMO in the crank case with every oil change (14 qt oil capacity.) He also recommends a quart into the 38 gallon diesel tank every once in a while.

In doing some searches and reading the MSDS, I'm not sure if this is the best practice for my '99 7.3.

What are your thoughts? Any recommendations for fuel system cleaners or oil additives?

The MMO is going to thin your oil and probably dilute the oil additives. A one time shot for no more than an OCI might help clean some stuff out, but I wouldn't run it every change.

Don't really need an oil additive, but if you really want one, Valvoline Synpower Oil Treatment is very good, but will thicken your oil with a whole bottle. Some use it at one ounce per quart of oil, which is reasonable.

Now it might help to know what kind of vehicle, engine, miles, other details (uses oil, etc) you have so folks can make more specific recommendations.

Fuel system. Typical use is a bottle of cleaner in the tank once every oil change cycle. Redline SI-1 is supposed to be very good stuff. Chevron Techtron also very good (I think there are two versions, one is better, don't know which). There are others.

As for techron, the one you want is "Techron Concentrate", its like 6.12 for a 12oz bottle at walmart.

Best fuel system cleaner(OTC) is Redline, but it is VERY tough to find now at AAP and AZ. Gumout Regane is the best in stores
right now IMO. About 5.32 at walmart.

For a diesel vehicle, an additive to aid lubricity and cleaning should always be used. Stanadyne, Primrose, PowerService, Howes, FPPF, Lucas......are some to try. But, I see no reason why you couldn't rotate in MMO as one of those fuel system additives. It offers lubricity and cleaning at a reasonable price.

I don't see a quart of MMO diluting a 3+ gallon sump to much. But, with the current CI4+ and CJ4 HDEO specs, there is no need for ANY oil additives. Concentrate your funds on filtration, filtration, and some more filtration. Install a bypass filter and use quality full flow filters.

Thanks guys. I guess I'll stick with just the Rotella or Chevron Delo 15-40 oil and no additives in the crank case.

I've been reading a site talking about the benefits of 2 cycle oil in the diesel. The guy claims things like Diesel Kleen, etc. are nothing more than solvents such as Naptha and xylene and do little for lubrication.

I use MMO as a fuel additive in my '72 Alfa GTV with SPICA mechanical injection that is similar in design to a diesel injection pump.

I put in ~ 4oz per tankful and have never had a problem with varnish in the injection pump. Smells nice too.

I thought that diesels lasted so long because the fuel had extra lubricity compared to gasoline [especially gas with alcohol in it].
It already has a certain 'oiliness' to it.

Have used Marvel Mystery oil in both my Saturns & a number of diesels over the years with good results. It is a decent fuel system cleaner that does little harm in the fuel system. So far as adding it to the oil on a diesel, don't. The last thing you want in a diesel engine is to thin the oil or dilute the additive package.

Have any of you guys ever had a VOA on that stuff?
The biggest 'mystery' to me is why anyone would put it in anything!

My old '71 Dodge Dart with the 30-D Economy Six engine ("slant six") was offered to me free if I could get it running, which I did with a new distributor and timing chain. However, it had a pesky near-misfire at idle and so I ran some MMO in the tank for a few tankfuls. Cleared it up and never had a problem after that. The MMO did something good.

Those slant sixes were among the very best engines ever.

already been said, but i'll stack another on the pile:

MMO in gas: fine, good stuff, plenty of evidence that it definitely doesn't hurt anything and has good potential to help. It's nice and gentle, some cleaning and lubrication up top, no problem there.

MMO in oil: maybe as a short OCI cleaning agent, some deposits might respond, some might not. Worth a shot on something you don't care about, but should not be run in the oil on EVERY oil change.

Posted this in another thread about MMO - thought I woudl share here as well

If we are going to talk about MMO, then we need to be accurate about what is in it and quit all the speculating. Here are the main ingredients from the MSDS:

2. POSITION/INFORMATION ON INGREDIENTS

COMPONENT CAS NUMBER CONCENTRATION (wt %)

Naphthenic Hydrocarbons 64742-52-5 70 – 80

Mineral Spirits 08052-41-3 20 – 30

Chlorinated Hydrocarbons 00095-50-1 0 – 1

It also contains enough sulfur to make it not ULSD compliant and not recommended for 2007+ diesels (from their Forum)

It also likely contains ZDDP, since the MMO Stop Leak product is also acknowledged to have it in it.

While I am not really a fan of MMO - many here misinterpret what MMO is - it is really Mineral Spirits and Naptha (not a light oil) with some lubricity achieved through components such as Sulfur, ZDDP, and chlorinated hydrocarbons.

The concern for many with MMO is the chlorinated hydrocarbons, which may be very lubricious, but creates hydrochloric acid as a by-product when burned. This may or may not be an issue as it is a very small percentage of the total package (0-1%)

I've read the MSDS all we know is they use the same MSDS for all the products I have seen MSDS's for. Not everything has ZDDP or at least not equal amounts, stop leak and MMO HD oil stabilizer both do definately have ZDDP per Marvel. Chlorinated Hydrocarbons is a concern but with %'s of 0-1 it could have none at all, just don't know.

Good to know. Sounds like it might be good for a semi-annual cleaning, but no so good for every tank fill?

I think I'll switch back to ATF or try that Auto RX for my oil cleaner.

I agree - the slant 6 was one of the most dependable engines of all time. Can you imagine how much it would benefit from modern stuffs like fuel injection?

If you want to clean your engine, run a few shorter oil change intervals, I would NOT be putting in ATF or MMO into that crankcase - simply run either Delo 400 or Rotella diesel oil, they are both GREAT oils with GREAT additives.

I have an '01 Cummins diesel that's had a life of Delo 400, I wouldn't dream of putting any additives in the crankcase - they're simply not needed.

What I would do, is shorten the OCI's for a few rounds, and make sure that engine is good and hot prior to changing the oil.

32 ppm of Boron, 2 ppm of silicon, 1 ppm cacium, 902 ppm phosphorus, and 2 ppm zinc.

The SUS viscosity at 210F was 34.4. The flashpoint was 190F.
