Long commute -- 4+ hours per day

You have your reasons and you also have my sympathy.
Books On Tape, or disc or thumb drive these days, would be my recommendation.
I'd listen to those or NPR myself.
I've looked at opportunities when younger that would have involved a long commute.
Glad I never did it and certainly couldn't endure it these days, since I'm older and traffic is now worse.

Find a job closer to home even if you take a pay cut.

10 years ago, I communted 1.5 hours each way for a job that paid $10/hr. I was completely broke all of the time, but I loved that job. Lots of cheap coffee.

75 minute commute here... but half of it is in a coordinated van-pool. I sleep through that and have more time to myself.
