At one time, when you bought a decent quantity of oil, you bought a case of 24 cans.
There were larger volume cans, but you rarely saw them.
Later, you might buy a case of twelve quart bottles of conventional or a six quart case of synthetic.
Over the past few years, case stocking at most retailers has dissapeared and almost everything is sold in either a ~5 qt jug or by the quart, with the exception of oils intended primarily for diesels, which come mostly in gallon jugs along with the ocassional quart sized bottle.
Not a rant, just an observation.

You can still buy a 12 quart case of Chevron at Costco.

Maybe its more dominate due to the modern "Save the Environment Mentality"
1 gallon jug of oil is less plastic than 4 individual quarts.
As well as a lot of people pour the used oil in the empty jug they just put in their car, easier than pouring it into 4 small quarts.
Quarts are usually on clearance more than jugs. People will buy a 15$ jug of QS over 4 Quarts for 5$ each. Thus the quart bottles end up clearenced or marked down and boom.

Modern cars don't use much oil. 30 or 40 years ago, it was good practice to have a few quarts laying around because pretty soon you were going to be a quart low. Plus, like GumbyJarvis said, the jugs are cheaper, and make oil recycling easier as well.

1) Larger jugs use less plastic, which means less space on shelves

2) the costco mentality means we want more for our $$

3) environment

4) larger packaging means less employee shrinkage aka 5 finger discounts on small bottles

But the labels are bigger and reach out to the shopper better!

Cars have gotten better at putting the oil fill right up top. Part of it's probably the overhead cams, so you don't have a stupid cap on the side of a valve cover. Part is those engine covers that come with a little extra snout for the oil. But it's easier to dive bomb a 5 qt jug, get it nearly right, then just keep going until it's half empty and easier to hold.

Even at retailers where you can buy a full case, they're still selling by the quart. If you buy a case, the case price is the same as if you bought 12 individual quarts. Some places don't even ring up the case, they open the case and scan the UPC on a quart and put in a quantity of 12.
