One job I just pay the mechanic for.

I replaced the struts on my E46 BMW years back and it was a struggle. I had taken them to a BMW specific shop to swap the springs and all it did was break their wall-mounted compressor.

I bought one of these neat little compressors back when BavAuto was still in business and it was a godsend. It made changing the struts a breeze.

Spring compressors are only needed for re-installing the springs.

Removal is easy...place strut on laying down on ground OUTSIDE of garage pointed away from everything.
Place good impact on top strut nut
Place right foot on impact, and step down HARD
Reach down with right hand and look away from spring
Actuate air gun to release top nut
Retrieve old strut, and spring from somewhere in the front yard

Works every time.

The funny thing is a lot of people might think I am joking...I'm not. I've done it at least a dozen times. You don't re-use he nut or the strut...all I want is the spring. Math says the force is actually pretty small, and for only a moment in time. Quite effective.
