Update: I've put 400 miles on the rebuild, oil level has not moved and of course there is no smoke. It would have been halfway down the stick by now before. I just filled up for the first time and got 27 mpg. Previously, I was getting between 23-24 doing the exact same type of driving. I did replace the spark plugs and front O2 sensor as both were SEVERELY carboned up so I'm sure that helped, and I'm sure the combustion chambers were the same as I'd get pinging under all but the lightest acceleration and sometimes even then. It would go away if I ran a bottle of injector cleaner through it but would come right back as soon as I stopped using it as the carbon deposits re-formed.
