Harvey flooding in Texas

Yes! Lol waffle house and McDonald's were almost the only people open. We went to a Mexican restaurant yesterday that was open, but only had like one or two waitresses and I was afraid for their safety, since the limited staff was causing long wait times. We were fine with that, but others weren't.

100% of donated funds go to relief, overhead is covered by LDS church. \

Salvation/Red Cross/ any other [censored] organization did not show up or ever contact them.
ALL donations of food/clothes came from people donating them.
I understand it's a middle class neighborhood so maybe theres that.
But their presence on the ground/help after is Zero.

Really shows you its the ordinary citizen that comes to save others, rather than any government/charity.

You do realize it takes time, right? They have to stage equipment in a safe area, then bring it in once safe to do so.
72 hours is the standard timeframe for relief services from a national level to arrive, and they are now arriving here in Houston area (and have been in Corpus and other areas also hit by Harvey, it is not just Houston).
Some areas are still not reachable by vehicle, so these relief resources are not able to get to them, they need to be brought out to them, and as mentioned, many don't want to leave.

Yep, the rain just moved on - Colorado River is out of the banks in Wharton County - they are building a big reservoir next to that river that was supposed to take 7 years to fill. Heard it would of filled multiple times ...

Read in the Omaha World Herald this AM that Texas has asked if the remaining Search and Rescue group made up of Omaha and Lincoln firefighters could be deployed to the Houston area. I'm sure Nebraska will respond with more men and equipment. We may very well be the state asking for help in the future. Had Chinese at Hy-Vee, our local grocery, today and Hy-Vee is asking for donations to help the Texas flood relief. The grocery chain headquartered in Des Moines,Iowa is going to match all donations. The well managed chain has stores in Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska and I believe South Dakota. I hope Hy-Vee will use its buying power to send truckloads of needed items to southeast Texas. We wish our Texas friends weren't having to go through such a traumatic event and want them to know that we are ready to help them in anyway we can. Better days are ahead. Hook em Horns.

Get rid of your car and buy a truck.
Least you have something that wasn't lost.
I'm sure you have a thick fat savings working that hard/long.

I have had a truck all my life. Ironically, I just gave mine away a month ago to my son, who now lives far away. I was planning on getting one ASAP, but the flood just hit and now so many are flooded out I don't even want one from the SE TX area.

I work and I have savings, but most is tied up, and I stressed I was NOT asking for anything free. I have about 2000 cash on hand, I OFFERED TO BUY.

The SHELTER Port Arthur set up flooded! They had to evacuate the people out of the shelter! Its just insane.

I grew up on the west side of Houston. Used to slide down Addicks Dam on a cardboard box. There was nothing out there but fields and forrests. Bear Creek Park was brand new then. We used to drive out there to fly model rockets.

Looked up on Bing Maps to view the area a few days ago and was astounded to see all the housing developments built around both Addicks and Barkers Reservoirs. Even right down near the outlet gates!!

To the left is Barker Reservoir. The dam runs top to bottom. Hwy 6 was the only road out there. Buffalo Bayou begins here and snakes through that whole area. Further down it's joined up by the outflow from Addick's Reservoir (see blue lines).

That's just nuts buying a house down in that area.

Both of these were built in the 30's or 40's I think, to protect dwntn HTX from flooding from Buffalo Bayou, which eventually dumps into the ship channel.

On average, HTX gets about 52" rain/year. They got that in about 5 days. Because it's so flat and right at sea level, the whole area fills up like a basin.

My house never flooded while growing up there as the street was lower than the houses, with curbs & storm drainage. Not sure the old house survived this storm though...

Just devastating to watch the reports.........

It looks like a genuine nightmare. Best of luck to you and everyone in the affected areas.

Just saw ABC News this evening and Pentagon said 25,000 National Guardsmen will be in Texas, that number included the TX National Guard.
