Harvey flooding in Texas

Partly cloudy this morning and almost needed my eclipse glasses to readjust after so many days of dark sky/rain ...
We were lucky having been in between the worst winds and the worst rains.

I'll wait until Friday to head south and see how bad the camp flooded and how much is damaged. 1st look might be by boat if still too deep for 4WD's 4WD ...

Hi everyone. I have been completely flooded out of my home. No FLOOD insurance - we were told we DID NOT NEED IT! My subdivision is under 3 to 10 ft. of water. God has blessed us with passage to a safe place (hotel) by way of the SE TX volunteer "Navy". I have pretty much lost everything, including my two nice cars, except for the clothes on our backs and three small dogs.

I have never ever asked for anything in my life - I am 53 and I work 60 hrs a week. Today though, I am in need of a truck. All I was able to escape with was a small, old Ford Escort. I need a full size truck to gut my home and haul rebuilding supplies over the next 2 - 3 months. I am NOT ASKING FOR ANYTHING "FREE". If someone just wanted to donate a truck to someone ANYWAYS, I would gladly accept it. If someone wanted to sell me one in good working order that has NOT been through the flood for $2000 or less I can meet you 50 miles north of Houston, but please lets talk first.

I WILL recover! We are strong. I can pay my way SOON. I appreciate any help that anyone in the BITOG community wants to give. But truck or not, please remember my family and I in you prayers. PM me, thanks.

Do not own a truck . Do not live close . But our prayers go out to you and and all the other folks impacted by the storm .

Best wishes , :-)

Nebraska rescue units out of Omaha and Lincoln and Army National Guard helicopters out of Lincoln and Grand Island are doing what they can to help. The only way we can help is to donate $$ but I don't trust the American Red Cross. I don't want to be contributing to organizations that have high paid executives who are mostly interested in their own bottom line. Any suggestions?

There all full of [censored] OP!
Don't believe any of that raise awareness/donate/help all you can.
Unless you like donating "Pennies on the Dollar"
I'd keep the money in my pocket.

I helped out a bit as I have a small 16' flat bottom boat.
It's about 80% volunteer and 20% coast guard/leo's. Helicopters have been working hard that I can say.
If it wasn't for the volunteers, many people would not have been saved.

***** on media, FEMA and Red Cross were asking for donations BEFORE they even did anything.
What a [censored] joke, gotta pay to play just like an escort though.

I don't care what your politicians say on the news as far as whos helping.
Every politician/lieutenant/head of rescues/B-S position is stating that were have police, state troopers, border patrol, etc on the ground.
B-S, I've been in summerwood & CE King and it was just unprepared/unequipped precincts but several good coast guard choppers.

I'm on the ground and I'm seeing it.
There is no red cross or slavation army.
Maybe providing clothes/food but what do you know, people donated tons of food and clothes at the local school.
Red cross/salvation army just distribute that out, LOL

To OP that needs a truck.
Get rid of your car and buy a truck.
Least you have something that wasn't lost.
I'm sure you have a thick fat savings working that hard/long.

Yeah, unfortunately lots of scams will be going on, that happens with any natural disaster or 9-11.

Besides the National Guard, some active duty military needs to be sent there for a few months..... local police and fire rescue will burn out very quickly.

UPDATE:
Death Toll

There's now a Curfew in Houston from 10-6, effective today.
It is now ILLEGAL to be out during those times.
Don;t want to know what's the punishment on that, Ha!

Reason being, water is receding and missing peeople are starting to show up.
Yes theres many dead bodies and coast guard will be picking them up at dusk.

The last thing they want is for people or media or Anyone taking pictures of deceased.
Just like they did during Katrina.
When "The Times" had pictures of deceased on the ground covered up, right next to soldiers

Looters are also out which is another reason for the curfew. The National Guard has been deployed as well--12,000 of them in the affected areas. At a time when people should be helping others, we have an "element" that seeks to profit. Texas is the wrong state for that to happen

I feel that a minimum of 5000 active duty military..... plus entire TX National Guard to maintain law and order.
If you're getting a paycheck and benefits for your service then you can definitely spend 3 months helping fellow Americans.

Let's face it, there are some looters that will take advantage of this bad situation and local police / county / state law enforcement are simply overwhelmed.

Okay, yea true indeed!
Didn't think about that at all.
Know several people that stayed....
Just to protect their valuables like guns LOL.

Saw 2 bodies earlier. Still can't get over myself on that one.
Young maybe pre-teen, couldn't get to them as current was way too strong.
Plus there was debris everywhere would have got the propeller.
Still hurt very much.

Isn't it funny how cash donations are the only way they tell us that we can help?

Smart guy. IMO they're like scavengers of disaster. They always raise far more than they report and waste significant amounts of it on the 'inefficiencies' of their operation, that is whatever doesn't make it to their disaster-service buddy contractors.
Always find a way to donate directly to the people if you want to help them.

335,000 Army National Guard (2017)
195,000 Army Reserve (2017)
990,000 total (2017)

From Wikipedia the manpower of Army in 2017.

** Correction **
Minimum 15,000 active duty Army troops should be immediately sent to Texas.

Residents are still in shock.... in a few days when people start getting hungry, angry and frustrated, things will get very very bad. When people get desperate they will do crazy things they normally wouldn't be doing.

I'm not joking about sending that many troops to maintain law and order, food distribution, etc..

Lol speaking of which.
Sister volunteered at the local schools to cloth/feed people.
(There is absolutely Nothing for her to gain at all or win, just an ordinary person wanting to help)
Bit of a sheep you ask me.

Anyways
Salvation/Red Cross/ any other [censored] organization did not show up or ever contact them.
ALL donations of food/clothes came from people donating them.
I understand it's a middle class neighborhood so maybe theres that.
But their presence on the ground/help after is Zero.

Really shows you its the ordinary citizen that comes to save others, rather than any government/charity.

Not trying to pile on, but I saw a post where someone mentioned they were told they didn't need flood insurance. As a Water Resource Engineer, I cringe when I hear this. I'm going to guess a builder/lender/insurance agent suggested that. All of them just want to get you in the house - nothing more or less.

Just a tip: Anyone can buy flood insurance (so long as your community participates in the National Flood insurance program (and most do)). You don't have to be in a flood plain.

Flood insurance only is required for home at one point at a level of statistical risk above a 1% probability in any given year (what is often called a 100 year storm). Note that is in any given year - over the course of a typical 30 year mortgage, the probability of exceeding that 1% event is over 25% - not once in 100 years... There is a reason we try hard not to use the "100 year storm event" etc, but statistics aren't the everyday joes strong point so here we are...

Floods greater than the 1% probability happen - routinely - in the US every year. I always tell people to think about what their comfort level of risk is - and build as high as possible- not just at the minimums.

None of that is helpful to those impacted in Houston today, but if it makes someone else think, then its worth mentioning...
