Customer brought this in today because it is leaking oil everywhere. It looks like someone dropped the filter prior to installing it? This filter isn't really in an area where it could be hit by any debris. It's cracked where it is smashed. V6 Equinox

I don't know. The filter is way up high above the ac compressor and behind the radiator on this vehicle. Not sure what happened .

I agree, that's more than a drop.

That does look like a pretty safe location, if something did come up and hit it, you'd definitely see damage on other parts.

Lots of weird stuff happens when you run over things.

I don't know if this is urban legend - soon after the San Mateo Bridge was opened, it was reported that a woman ran over a length of rebar. The bar had flipped upwards and came through the driver side floorboard impaling her. No, she didn't survive.

How could it crack like that whether you drop it or hit with something. That's some low quality casing.

If you zoom in on the photo, the uneven texture of the blue paint on the filter housing looks very suspect...almost looks like someone re-sprayed it with a rattle can, perhaps to cover up existing damage to the canister housing. Looks like there may be some blue paint inside the cavity of the crack itself. It is also conspicuous that there are a couple of dents on the fractured end cap, but no gouged paint except for two small witness marks on the cylindrical part of the can just above the fluted end.

What kind of filter was it? AC Delco? Purolator? Unlabeled generic overseas jobber filter?

I'm pretty sure the shinny mark is from when my tech removed the filter.
