I've heard ads recently on the radio about a new process where they freeze portions of fat in your body, and then the body eliminates them. When I first heard it, I thought it sounded pretty crazy, but I Googled it, and sure enough, it's a thing.

Look, I admit that I'm overweight, but I'm just not sure that I like the idea of carrying necrotic tissue around in my body. The commercial said that the freezing kills the fat cells, and then they're eliminated. That sounds revolting. I've lost nearly 10 lbs. recently just from being on an almost completely fat-free diet to keep my gallbladder from exploding. So if I really wanted to lose weight, I'd certainly take an approach other than having my fat sucked out or frozen to death.

This because your body will be shock when it looses anything, especially when your fat enough that your fat has a blood supply of it's own.

Nothing beats a healthy diet with exercise. The more research I have been doing since college I realize that diet plays a bigger factor then we are taught to believe.

I agree that surgery should be left for those who are dangerously overweight. Let me clue everyone in to the real secret of weight loss:

BURN MORE CALORIES THAN YOU CONSUME

Time and time again the NIH and other well-known groups publish studies to PubMed and other journals that prove this is the most straightforward and safe way to drop weight. Use a calorie counting journal or app on your phone to do it and don't play games with fad diets or guess-and-check on the scale. It's amazing how fast the weight will come off. Here's what I've accomplished in the last 3 months with MyFitnessPal by living on a slight calorie defecit:

That's right, 18.6lbs in 3 months. And you know what? I don't feel hungry all the time. I occasionally eat junk food. I don't have to exclusively eat non-fat/low-fat foods. I have regular beer when I go out socializing. The app keeps me in check.

Yeah, I use the elliptical 6 nights a week but I don't have to kill myself on it and pray that I lose weight on the scale the next morning. I just use the app religiously and the weight continues to come off. It takes me all of 30 seconds with each meal. If you're curious, my body fat percentage has dropped about 7% during that time as well. I've also put on about 4 pounds of lean muscle mass (the kind that burns additional fat).

Once I get to a healthier body fat percentage, I plan to keep using the app to build up a bit more muscle.

Trust me, start using MyFitnessPal. You'll thank me later. Also, losing 20lbs = car is faster.

My problem is gaining weight. It's so hard to gain any pound and so easy to loose what I gained in just few days. I eat all the fatty foods but no result, somehow my body burnt all the calories easily. I'm 5'7" at 120-125 lbs, the heaviest was 135 lbs when I was mid 20's. I wish I can gain 10-15 lbs.

About three years ago, I needed to loose some weight. I stopped drinking pop/soda entirely and replaced it with water with a little lemon added for flavor.

Next, I cut out all snacking, (no cookies, cake or candy between meals).

I followed that with healthy eating at breakfast, lunch and dinner. My wife is a marvelous cook, (one reason I had gained so much weight over the years) and she started cooking veggies in creative ways that I loved.

Here's the thing - I ate as much as I wanted at meals. I never felt hungry or craved anything I couldn't have. If I really wanted a snack between meals, I ate an apple, an orange or some grapes or a fresh tomato.

In no time, I dropped 30 pounds. I slept better at night and woke up feeling refreshed rather than groggy. Added to that was tons of energy.

Long story short, no "special diet," no weighing food on little scales and certainly no surgery or odd procedures of rotting body fat - simple healthy food and a little bit of disciple did the trick for me.

How do you prepare the disciple? Is it tasty?

You don't need apps, you don't need fads and you don't need surgery to lose weight. It just takes a little common sense, a healthy diet, exercise and the willpower to stick with it.

I weigh myself about once a month, more out of habit than anything else. I'm always within 2 pounds (+ or -) of my previous weight. We don't eat junk or fast foods, we certainly don't drink soda pop, and we eat wholesome, balanced, healthy meals. We exercise on a daily basis (usually outdoors on the bikes or walking/jogging with the dogs). My wife is similar, she has no issues maintaining her ideal weight and we just use some common sense. We don't sit around parked in front of the television giving our fingers a remote control workout-we're usually busy doing something constructive with our time.

When you manage to keep it off for a decade then I'll be impressed. Until then you're most likely to put it right back on in a year or two, just like 80% of the other fat people who have lost weight.

It's far easier to not put that fat on in the first place, but apps, fads and diets are not the way to lose it if you do put it on.

That's what I think most people struggle with, and what they perceive is healthy instead of what is actually healthy.

Sometimes hyperthyroidism does this. My father had a good friend die at age 44 because she had complications from hyperthyroidism.

If you re-read my post, and look at the app, you will see that it teaches you good eating and exercise habits. It's not a fad.
