I agree. Pleat spacing won't change the media surface area ...
That may be literally true, but media surface within pleats that are jammed tightly together isn't going to be as effective as fully exposed surface.

The used filter in your photograph doesn't look as unevenly spaced as the ones I see in stores lately.
 
Funny you bring it up - I too noticed mine had a section where the pleats were tighter together than in others. I agree with everyone else though... with depth-filtration media, I really don't care that much... plus it's wire backed - so no risk of folding over. Mine was a 2017 build, but still had the 15,000mi rating on the box FWIW.
