Eggs - shocking prices

Picked up eggs at Costco last week and paid $15.99 for 5 doz double pack and $6.49 for 2 doz pack. ;)

Colorado now has a law that requires cage free eggs as of 2023. This has also limited supply. I've always tried to purchase free range eggs but yeah ...
That term is basically meaningless. The chickens are let out for such a short time and then they are called free range. Another marketing ploy.

No not free range, cage free. Until the egg suppliers figure it out, the supply went away and prices shot up. The local breakfast joints are raising their prices accordingly, if they have eggs at all.

Food prices rose 12% while egg prices went up 49% past 12 months. Blame Avian Flu for an egg shortage. When more laying chickens are back producing the price will come back down. If you like eggs eat eggs, most people don't eat 4 a day like our resident egg fanatic so it shouldn't break the bank. ;)

My dad was a poultry specialist for a farm supply co-op,(Agway for you easterners), and he would lament how egg prices were kept low as a store price leader and egg farmers were always on a razor thin margin.

To compare, in 1980 gas was $1.19/gallon and eggs were $.84/dozen. In 2021 eggs were $1.67. Today's price of eggs had nothing to do with the stock market or the state of the union.

Fun fact: A commercial chicken would lay an egg on average every 27 hours when my dad was working. Ouch.

Avian Flu. Its real, and it is a thing. Not a conspiracy, as apparently many on this board appear to subscribe to... Of course, most everyone is so far removed from where their food actually comes from these days, they have no idea.

And yes, the Colorado legislature passed the cage free bill that comes into affect on top of Avian Flu, and shock of all shocks the price goes up and they place limits on what you can buy at the store (2 Doz was common while I visited family at Christmas).

The high price is really a shame since eggs were historically a source of high-quality protein that was affordable by individuals without a lot of disposable income.

North of $7.50 for a dozen eggs.

Chicken under Two buck a pound.

So just eat the chicken instead of it's eggs. That's 62 cents a serving for the egg and 50 cents for an 8 ounce portion of chicken. And chicken is going to better for you anyway. I have never once in my life bought eggs and wouldn't know what to do with them if I did.

We (3 kids and me) go through a 7.5 dozen box every 10 days. 2019 Sam's club $18. Now $32!! Has been $32 for about 6 weeks. I thought it was horrendous most of last year at $27.

Bought a half dozen at WalMart this past weekend for $2.36. Ate one this morning, it was good.

I pay on average $5 per dozen of locally sourced, pature raised chicken eggs which are very high quality. Some sources may charge closer to $7 per dozen. Duck eggs in my area are $10 per dozen on average in my area.

Out my back window few of the girls that's a free rage chicken I'm getting about 20 eggs a day.

Cooked eggs smell like feet. No thanks.

I eat four raw eggs everyday usually, per my doctor's recommendation and some days I eat more like five or six. Now before anyone gets paranoid about things like salmonella just know that sick chickens produce sick eggs, if you know where the eggs come from and you know that the chickens are healthy then you can rest assured that you will not get sick from eating them even raw.
