Do you run a Fram TG?

I'm not joking when I say we have Fram TGs on anything that calls for an oil filter. My jeep, my Ford fusion, my parents Ford f150, my dad's jeep, my parents lawn mower, my motorcycle.

I feel like it does not get the love it deserves. Great filter that is rated for the perfect OCI for those that are 'new filter for each oil change'.

Every one that I have cut open has been great.

No, the Ultra is too close in price for much better performance. The TG is an excellent filter though.

I remember there was a discussion here on bitog that Honda OEM is extra guard, not the tg

Extra guard doesnt have silicon ADBV, ToughGuard does. Thefilter media may be honda spec beta and material.

If you can get the Honda for 4 bucks run those instead

This is the "universal" Asian engine filter (minus toyota) used on most all Asian cars; e.g: Subaru, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, MItsubish, Mazda.

I ran them with good success on the Nissan QR25DE in a 14 Rogue Select , though it liked the Honda S2000 filtech "race" filter best of all. Never any "odd" engine noise and excellent VVT operation

I'm currently using a Chinese TG 10358 cartridge. So far, so good. I agree that it's overpriced---especially considering it's literally the smallest, lightest, simplest filter in Walmart. However, it has much less erratic pleat spacing than the equivalent Ultra, and hasn't attracted the complaints with dimensional and structural issues that the Ultra version has on BitOG.

This is correct.

Tough Guards are very good filters....

but you will **NEVER** tell any difference in filtering ability outside of a lab environment.

I have dozens of Tough Guards that I purchased when they were on clearance at Walmart a few years ago for only $1.50 each.

Expect with an ISO particle count .. easily purchased by anyone who what's to spend the money. Difference in oil cleanliness of about 10x between a 99% @ 20u vs 99% @ 40u. Of course nobody can "see" the difference without lab data ... certainly aren't going to see a difference by looking at the oil on a dipstick or Fe or "insolubles" in a UOA.

ISO PC vs Filter Efficiency.webp

Wow. I've been schooled. Fram is stepping up. They USED TO BE nitrile anyone know when they changed? Why does the Subaru O.E. service Blue Fram-a-roo have a buna-N ADBV still ?!

So for everyone talking about the price difference between the TG and XG, are you actually using the XG for the full 20,000 miles?
If you buy a TG for $7 and run it for 7500 miles or buy a XG for $9 and run it 7500 miles, there is no benefit of using the XG except you feel better, but you spent more.

Do I think the TG is overpriced, yes, but it is a great filter for those doing a 5000-10,000 mile interval.

I have 8 "old" TG from the Walmart clearance last year and have no issue using them on anything I service, and would have no issues using them on anything I may ever service.
Here is a C&P from my sisters Santa Fe with 8500 miles on it.

The XG
- flows better
- has superior media
- Is likely in bypass far less due to that superior media flow
- Has higher filtration efficiency

While there isn't a huge difference in filtration efficiency between the TG and the XG, the XG's synthetic media will be more efficient while flowing better, preventing bypass events and resulting in more oil getting filtered.

My wife's CRV is about 60/40 hwy/city and my Civic is 100 hwy. I guess my question is how many people run Fram TG filters?

With Walmart's new pricing, TGs are $9 now. If your store hasn't gone up yet, it will shortly.
I like the new Fram EGs with silicone ADBV for (new pricing) $5.69. Or a Wix for around $7.99.... or a STP XL (Champ) for around $8.
Some areas of the country have the better-grade Premium Guard with silicone ADBV. That's a nice filter for $6-7.

Less than two years ago, anyone could get a Tough Guard for around $5.69. Not anymore and raising the price almost 40% is ridiculous. I would boycott them.

When do you think the price will go up? I just bought mine a couple days ago for like $6. I just looked up my local Walmart and the TG is normal price. The EG won't work for me since I'm doing 7,500 mile OCI. I change the filter every time.

I think Honda OEM filters are actually closer to Fram EG. So, I switched to TG because they are the same price but a better filter.

I wish that was the case here. I was getting the A01 filters for about $7 but I'm in big 3 country and don't have a lot of options.

Thanks for the info everyone. I appreciate all the feedback. I really hope the price doesn't go up on the TG because I feel it is a good price for my OCI. If it goes up I may have to look into another filter. I like buying everything together and not going to multiple stores, so I'm hoping Walmart keeps the normal price.

If they put the grey can's guts inside the orange can and had it at orange can prices in Canada, I'd be much more likely to use Fram oil filters. I'm never a fan of Canadian Tire's sales model, which doesn't help matters, either. I can get a Baldwin for my G37 for under $5 walk in price. Playing CT's price game for orange cans in comparison is silly. Now, the Fram air filters, sometimes I'll even special order them in.

I've been getting them on Amazon, I found a wicked deal on the ones for the Jeep.

But that's a silly thing to say because in reality you wouldn't be able to notice the difference between the best oil filter out there, and a terrible one that has a tendency to have torn media, but that doesn't mean those of us want to run the terrible filter. So we all want to run something much better, even if we cannot tell the difference either way.

Same goes for oil, most people couldn't tell the difference between a high quality oil and an oil that is on the PQIA "hit list" but that also doesn't mean we should go that route either.
