Dent is oil filter housing ok to use?

Purchased a Fram FE3614. Last filter on the shelf. Went to install and noticed a dent in the outside housing.

Any concerns using this filter?

I would call that "dented oil filter"
there is no housing.

Also I cant tell how severe the dent is from the poorly lighted photos provided.

If in doubt you know what to do.
 
I mean it's not terrible and dent not at the top. Still if the can is pressed against the media inside it might minimize the filtering in that area but this is rated for 25k so rest of media should be just fine. Just cut the interval down from 25k that you feel comfortable with.
 
Looks like it's a used filter with the dent and and marks at the base. Then they possibly swapped it with the new filter and put it back in the box. Purchased from Walmart?
 
Base up
9" x 6" piece of 3/4" plywood
Hold it against the baseplate leaving a small gap
Squirt in some lighter fluid and touch a match to it
Should pop it out

RA sourced oil filters included a small note which read, "We know they're dented, and you can't return them."
I used them without trouble, but the experience tempered my regard for RA.

I suspect your example is good to run
 
It's probably fine but I wouldn't use it unless the old one was already off and I had no choice. I always buy my filters in store and inspect before buying.
 
Take it back for an exchange to a different Walmart that has one, or order one on-line from Walmart to have it sent to the store you got this one from.

Yes purchased from Walmart and the carton was opened prior. Was the only filter of this model in stock.
 
Decided to go safe and purchased another filter. This time Mobil 1.

This is going on a GX470, which requires removing two undercarriage plates to get to the oil filter. So minimizing risk, regardless of how unlikely.

Of note, I do not follow the BITOG doctrine of using oil for extended intervals, regardless of how good the oil is. I change oil every 3,000 miles. My 3valve f350 with the 5.4l went 200k miles with zero tensioner issues, and my wild speculation was very frequently changing the oil counterer the tensioner timing chain design flaws.

That filter will be fine to use.

If you've ever seen the filters that hang under tractors and other off-road equipment used in the field/woods, you'd know that dented filters are very common and rarely result in any mischief. I was just under a Mahindra 8560 this past week and the hydraulic and trans filters both had dents in them not unlike what is shown above. Been like that for more than 100 hours of use. Not a hint of any problems other than the aesthetic damage.

IS the RA policy new? A few years ago I had gotten 8 or so Champion COS filters. A couple were dented. I sent them pictures and they sent me two new ones. I want to say that was shortly after we moved into this house, so, gosh, closer to 5 years ago.....
