just bought a 2010 caliber for the wife and the factory tires are horrible in the rain, which is a very big problem when you live in oregon. so i'm trying to decide between the cooper cs4's and the hankook h747's. i'm leaning towards the coopers since they are made in the u.s. and i've had really good luck with coopers in the past, but i hear very good things about the hankooks and they are slightly cheaper. so i'm looking for some insight on here from anyone having experience with these tires.

We have the Coopers on my wife's Saturn L300 and could not ask for better rain performance. She was driving through a rainstorm near Harrisburg, PA the other week where there was over 4" of rain. When she got home she told me that she felt very secure on these tires. I just replaced the tires on my Frontier with the Discoverer version of these. Also great tires.

Both tires will serve you well. Buy best price. I have the H727 on a mazda3 and they're great and I wouldn't hesitate to get the CS4's. The Cooper may also be had in "T", "H" rated where as the Hankook is only available in the "T".

Other good tires are available. Check the ratings in the catigory that your buying as you may find a tire that is even better suited for you and your wifes driving style/climate.

Go with the CS4's! I chose them for my parents PT Cruiser. They are a very good rain tire. They live in the Socal desert, and it was one of the rainest winters in a very long time. They get lots of standing water on the roads, and they never had a problem with traction. They are super quiet also.

What size wheel do you have on your Caliber?

+1 on the CS4s! No experience with the hankoos, dunno.
I took a new set of H rated CS4s to the west coast and back last month. About 6k total and they were flawless in the rain and light snow in the mountains. Quiet, comfortable and good mpgs after the 1k break-in. Family Camry has 45k on a set of V-rated ones with good wear patterns.
I got a great deal on the new ones at Blain's Farm&Fleet.
Their sales are really good but infrequent.

the size is 215/60r17, kind of a tough size to find, but the caliber is a nice departure from the 01 volvo s80 we traded in, besides the tires we really love this car.

The T-rated CS4s are incredibly sluggish for handling. It's bad enough that you'd notice the difference on a Prius!

My friend has 17k on his set and they are at 7/32" on all 4 corners. So, I doubt they are going to make it past 50k.

My T rated CS4's have over 60,000 miles on them. They are easily going to make the 80,000 mile mark. They are quiet and never need to be balanced. I will be buying a second set when these are worn out.

They are made in the USA. Mississippi to be exact.

Here's a little math for ya, although no one asked!

Should you want to get a wider tire, the 235-55-17 is the same overall diameter.

215-60-17 = 27.16"
235-55-17 = 27.18"

Not my experience. I have them on my turbo Volvo, and the handling is decent. The really softened the ride, which is exactly what I wanted. I don't expect much handling from a t-rated tire, and I decided against the H-rated for ride comfort considerations. No tire I've had on this car yet has made it to its tread life warranty mileage, and I'm not looking for these to get there either...some cars just eat tires.

I found a great mail order price for the Coopers from ONLINETIRES.com, printed it, and Discount Tires matched the price. I was interested in the Hankook 727, but they didn't make my size.

Not from personal expeience of the CS4's but I do have the H727 and from the reviews that I have read, the Cooper CS4's seem to have a handling edge over the Hankooks H727's. In many areas the 2 are quite equal and the HankOptH727 just score higher overall but both/either are good choices.

If you want to stay with the CS4's, they have several speed rating while the H727 do not.

Seems to be a truism. From the hundreds of performance tire reviews on different websites that I've read recently, I noted that the owners of Mazda3 vehicles were the most likely to complain about poor tread life REGARDLESS OF TIRE BRAND.

mazda3 is a performance oriented car.. they probably setup the suspension/alignment for handling not treadwear.

although that's just hearsay and I don't claim it to be true.

either will serve you well.

if both were identical priced I'd probably go cooper for usa.

I got a set of CS4's for the wife's '04 Accord several months back- because I wanted better wet traction. I had a similar choice- I had pretty much narrowed it down to the CS4 vs. the H727 (based on Char Baby's suggestion).

My decision came down to convenience and price. I couldn't find the H727's at a reasonable price anywhere locally, but found a reasonable deal on the T-rated CS4's (incidentally the T-rated version has an 80k warranty and a much higher tread-wear number vs the V-rated version's 60k warranty and lower tread-wear number). My only price-competitive option for the Hankooks would have been Tire Rack... which would have been a lot more trouble for essentially the same price.

It's been maybe 8000 miles and 5 months since I bought the tires, and I have no complaints whatsoever at this point. They're quite, have excellent traction, handle better than the previous tires (although I don't think a Riken Raptor VR is a tough act to follow).

It remains to be seen how they wear.

The Hankooks may be just as good a tire in all respects- I wouldn't know. They get rave reviews just like the CS4. I'd probably choose between the two based on price, availability, and service.

I have had just the opposite experience. The CS4s on my van have been outstanding - sure-footed and precise. And I never have had a better tire in wet conditions. They replaced a set of GY Integritys that came with the van. The difference in handling and performance was nothing short of monumental.

So if what I have now is sluggish, then those Integritys should have been condemned when they came off the line new.

Bought Altimax instead of the Coopers I usually get. 25K into them they are noisy noisy noisy. Shouldn't have ever left Coopers. I usually got 65K on a set and the $$ is right. Never had to rebalance them.

My dad has 20k on the CS4(t rated) 07 Camry and loves them. He liked the oem Michelins the car came with. But likes these much more. Since he's getting ready for a new car he remarked on swapping the tires out with the new car. Excellent price and performance.
