Chevy volt is 10,000$ over priced.

At least I hope a few people buy it. That will reduce the demand on my precious gasoline. Is that being selfish?

Duh! You really don't understand driving very far!

But one thing I do understand is the ridiculous lack of energy density. Where do you drive that you only go 40 miles? It's ludicrous.

And then you need PREMIUM fuel! For your ultra technologically advanced high safety 4 banger to run an alternator to run your electric car!

HA!

I'm with you on this one.

The green dufus movement will force this tech down our throats whether we like it or not.

You go first!

It's 40 miles now with the batteries in optimal condition what happens a few years down the road when the batteries are only retaining 70% charge at best?

40x0.70=

"Where do you drive that you only go 40 miles?"

To and from work each weekday. 34 mile round trip.
Most city dwellers will fall under this definition.

And the gravy is that I might never have to burn a single drop of gasoline doing it.

Name me another vehicle for any price (Tesla?) that can run 40 miles on electricity each day and not burn a single drop of gas?
SSC is reportedly working on a similar technology.

This is revolutionary. The internal combustion engine is nearing the end of it's long product cycle folks.
Get on or get out of the way.

No but in most states in the US you are burning far dirtier coal which has a lot more side-effects. Or creating lots of nuclear waste which hasn't had a safe effective way of dealing with it yet other than burying it or storing it under "heavy water"

Your call...

I assume sir that you own a product with a Hemi.

There will be street driven electrics soon that will leave you in their dust. Me too for that matter.

It's more efficient technology, cleaner, and can be much more powerful than anything street driven today. What is there not to like, except the price? The price will come down.

Easy call:

Since the electric is so much more efficient, and taking into account that hydro is clean power, coal plants are relatively clean now with new tech "scrubbers", and nuclear waste is being safely stored (there is a half life etc.). The electric automobile will now result in far less pollution than a hydrocarbon vehicle ever will.

What we need is MORE bureaucratic control of our life. We obviously don't know what is best for us. Electricity?? Don't worry about it. It just comes from that plug in the wall. Whats the big woof?? John--Las Vegas.

Great but how many are using these "scrubbers". The half-life on this nuclear waste is a very long time and considering we are running out of landfill space where do you think we are going to store all this nuclear waste if we switch to it for our main source of energy for everything we do?

The market will decide this one John.

If the electric automobile outperforms and operates at lower cost. (It will)
Vs: a hydrocarbon automobile the market will pick a new winner.

There are still a few people traveling by horse and buggy by the way. Not saying they are wrong either.

So may I assume that you will be disconnecting from the grid.... soon?

OK we can continue to banter this until our keyboard smokes or a mod intervenes.
You Sir are entitled to your opinion and I as well.

Rickey,

I'm not giving you a hard time or trying to have this thread locked, I'm seriously trying to point out where we are and why going electric may not be all its cracked up to be.

Sure gasoline aren't efficient but considering how toxic batteries are and how hard it is to recycle them and all the dirtiness associated with "clean power" it might just be a bait/switch scenario is all.

Tesla's are what, two seats and $100K+? The Volt is a bargain by comparison.

And isn't Tesla now hooked up with Toyota? Probably all of the Tesla's will be recalled for something or other within months.

Well, I see your points sir.

However there is product evolution.
The first internal combustion engines were pretty horrible in many respects as well.
And now it is mature technology. We have come a long way.

I believe that in our lifetimes we will see photovoltaic technology owned by private individuals in sufficient quantity; such that we can disconnect from the grid for the large part. Of course this would be sufficient to run our cars at the least.

It's got to start somewhere.

How many are not using these "scrubbers?" Are you saying that some don't need to use them, and others are using them just for the heck of it? I would think those are regulated across the board.

What makes you think we're running out of landfill space?
