Car manufacturer vs. Gates for timing belt interval

Gates can be wrong. My last car was a 1989 Honda Accord. It did not have an interference engine and the TB change interval was 90-110K miles. Gates said it was interference and that the TB should be changed every 60K miles. I saved a lot not paying attention to that for the 350K miles I had the car.

If you can afford being wrong and not heading the conservative recommendations, then go for it. If not, safe money is to follow it.

People here can give advice all day long you will be fine or not have a problem, those same people will not be around helping you financially if it does not work out that way.

I have used these many times without issue, they are all top quality parts. I wouldn't put gates on a riding mower.

Best thread I've seen on Bitog regarding Honda timing belt replacement kit linked below. It is for a V6, however I'd think it also applicable to a Civic as far as kit used. Gem Starter did a great job imo. Based on that I'd use the Aisin kit with complete confidence and pass on the Gates products.

As for change interval, you know or should know what the OM recommended interval is. Ime, it's months or miles whichever comes first. Whether you want to extend it a tad on either one, your call and comfort level. Plenty of advice given on that already.
