I live less than 2 miles from a parts store, my workplace, a dollar general, gas station, stihl dealer, my in laws, a veterinarian, a tire shop, UPS, a Post office and a grocery store. Pretty good for a town of 1200 people.
1998 F-150 with a 5.4 (2v) gets short tripped horribly, a couple times a week i'll take a run to the river or something and try to burn out the water but especially in the winter i see goo build up under my oil cap.
I've been running quaker state conventional 10w-30 and napa gold oil fiIters. don't appear to burn any oil, had the truck over 20,000 miles generally change every 3-5 and i'm never low. Been searching these forums and I hear all kinds of different ideas, manual reccomends 5w-20 but then people say on something with 160k you should go thicker, but some people don't think so do what ford says.
Midwest, i'm willing to run a different oil in the summer and the winter, I don't baby this truck it's a tool. Pulls a boat, camper, pontoon, another truck on a trailer, i'm not hesitant to floor it but do want to maintain it the best i can. Also my Daily Driver to get me to work and back.
So i guess I'm asking what oil would be best for the above situation, if any would work well for short trips or if i should suck it up and get up thirty minutes earlier to drive out of town then back to work.
Also any recommendations on diff fluid? Had this thing submerged in the backwater and need to address that.
I want to be one of those guys with a 300k motor and the way it's ran so far and the fact that it burns no oil at all, i think it's a good candidate.
