I'd step it up a notch or two from the Rotella and use Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5W40. It's a full synthetic compared to the hydrocracked Shell.

How about stepping down a notch or two and use Redline 5w-20.

The XHVI base oil used to make Rotella T synthetic is not "hydrocracked." It's a wax isomerate.

Whatever, it's still not a full synthetic, contrary to what the bottle says.

Why would you use a 5W20 in a engine that calls for a 40wt? Not smart.

That depends on what your definition of "synthetic" is. With hydrocracked Group III you start with oil and after the hydrocracking and isodewaxing you end up with a chemically pure base oil. You started with oil and you ended with oil.

With XHVI you start with wax that is about the consistency of vasoline and after the isomerization and hydrofinishing you end up with a chemically pure base oil that is roughly the consitency of 20wt oil. You started with WAX and you ended with OIL. Most people who are not stuck on the "only polymerization equals synthetic" definition of synthetic would say you have created a "synthetic" base oil out of wax.

Truth be told, I think enough molecular restructuring takes place in both hydrocracking and isomerization for the end products to legitimately be called "synthetic." But then again, I'm not a chemist.

If you can afford a Bentley or a Viper, you can afford a new engine. Run Canola oil in there if you feel like it!
Seriously though, if all your trips are real short, 5W20 will doubtless work fine.
And if you own a Viper and all your trips are real short, sell the Viper and use the proceeds to get a psychiatrist.
If you gave me a Viper today I'd call off work next week and spend the next 8 days trying furiously to keep that thing between the ditches.

To the last poster, who couldn't find 0w40:
Walmart is weird. They will have Rotella 10W30 and Rotella Straight 30 at one store, and at another, nada. They'll also have prices 10ct/qt different from one store to another, 9 miles apart.
If you don't see M1 0W40 at your local WM, that probably means their computer said that that store doesn't get it or is out.
Try Autozone or the other parts stores. One of them should have it.

I know you're being sarcastic and all, but in all reality, there's no way I'd even consider running a 20wt oil in a twin turbo engine that will see some hard use. Same goes for the Viper. Can you say BOOM?

AZO's new corporate policy is that the larger stores, with 25 linear feet of oil display space, carry Mobil 1 0W-40, whereas smaller stores do not, which means that my corner AZO no longer carries it. Fortunately, my local Kragen does. PepBoys keeps saying they'll carry it, but so far it's all talk and no walk!
