I run Amsoil SSO 0W30 in my wifes truck with Amsoil filter...well about a month ago I needed to change the oil and my local parts store was out of Amsoil so I decided to to get some Edge 5W30 and Bosch premium filter, her truck sounded like a diesel for the first few minutes after starting it in the morning, the oil pressure was good though. Anywho I switched it back to Amsoil SSO and filter and it is all well again.

I dont know if her truck just dont like Edge or if the filter was bad or what but that was a horrible noise.

The truck was raised on Mobil 1 10k oci's and at 80k I switched to Mobil 1 EP and at 12k it made these same noises? With the Amsoil I am running 20K OCI with one top off at 14k and have not had an issue....never had an issue with regular Mobil 1 either?

i think its higher cotton content that makes some quieter.
plus edge is a noisy oil anyway.. you ever seen the commercial?
i dont want my hair messed up so i dont even touch it

I'm sure the difference in sound is real, since so many people have commented about it. There has to be more to it than in our heads.

These are just a selection of threads with quiet in the title. Search deeper and almost every day someone is claiming some oil made their car quieter or noisier. Frankly, the only difference I ever noticed is how much quieter synthetic oil is when starting the car at 4°F. Engines do make interesting noises when near and below 0°F. And I have noticed some oil filters in some engines make more noise.

Classic are things like parts "smacking together" - ah dang - cap'n she's gonna blow!!

One guy said some oil made his car "a little quiter":

Maybe he should find the cause of that!

reguardless of what you say, the difference in sound is real. and i dont have the best hearing either. and my apologies on the spelling.

Unless you have a decibel meter there is no way to really verify that it is actually quieter. It might seem quieter, but that doesn't mean that it actually is. Also we have to admit that though the Edge fans often show this trump card, there are other posters that have stated that their vehicle was quieter with other oils vs Edge.

I agree, the difference is often very real. Not every vehicle changes sound with different oils, but some do without a doubt!

There is definitely a difference in sounds with different oils. How to quantify those differences is where we run into a wall.

Funny though it seems most people making these quieter oil claims are commenting about Edge making the improvements. I haven't done an actual count but I think Edge seems to be the oil mentioned most, I think. I guess its in the heads of all us Edge users!

Merry Christmas!!!!!

Agreed. I can definitely tell the difference in sound too. And I know it's not in my head as my wife, who's ignorant to oil's and car's in general noticed the sound difference in her truck not realizing I had changed the oil. And it wasn't the new oil that was quiet, it was the oil I took out. So...

I've been using PP 5w-30 for my past 3 vehicles and the only thing I can chime in with is how the engines sounds very quiet to me for the first 200 miles or so, and then gets to it's normal sounding levels.

Eh, or maybe I am just hearing things. : )
